Update to Financial products and services policy (December 2021)

In December 2021, Google will update the Financial products and services policy to clarify the scope and requirements for the advertisement of cryptocurrency related business and services. 

Beginning 15 December 2021, advertisers offering Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Wallets targeting Israel and Japan may advertise those products and services when they meet the following requirements and are certified by Google. Advertisers offering Cryptocurrency Exchanges targeting Canada may also advertise those products and services when they meet the following requirements and are certified by Google. To be certified by Google, advertisers will need to meet the following requirements, depending on the country that they are targeting:

  • Israel (Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Wallets)
    • Advertiser must be either (a) licensed by the CMISA (רשות שוק ההון, ביטוח וחיסכון) as a Financial Services Provider or (b) licensed by the Bank of Israel (בנק ישראל) as a banking corporation. Any other local legal requirements must also be complied with 
  • Canada (Cryptocurrency Exchanges)
    • Advertisers must be registered with FINTRAC (CANAFE) as a money services business and registered with the applicable provincial securities authority as an investment dealer or a marketplace. Any other local legal requirements must also be complied with 
  • Japan (Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Wallets)
    • Advertiser must be registered as a crypto asset exchange service provider with the Financial Services Agency (金融庁) of Japan. Any other local legal requirements must also be complied with.

The following is not allowed:

Ads for initial coin offerings, DeFi trading protocols or otherwise promoting the purchase, sale or trade of cryptocurrencies or related products

  • Examples (non-exhaustive): ICO pre-sales or public offerings, cryptocurrency loans, initial DEX offerings, token liquidity pools, unhosted software wallets, unregulated DApps

Ad destinations that aggregate or compare issuers of cryptocurrencies or related products

  • Examples (non-exhaustive): Cryptocurrency trading signals, cryptocurrency investment advice, aggregators or affiliate sites containing related content or broker reviews

As a reminder, we expect all advertisers to comply with the local laws for any area that their ads target. This policy will apply globally to all accounts that advertise these financial products. For more details, see About restricted financial products certification.

Violations of this policy won't lead to immediate account suspension without prior warning. A warning will be issued at least seven days prior to any suspension of your account.
