Video ads instead of matched content units??? 0 Recommended Answers 22 Replies 5 Upvotes

Wow. This is just incredible. Today sometimes instead of the matched content units Adsense is loading video ads that take up all the space! Of course I have not selected the option to monetize the matched content units. Yet today, instead of uploading the matched content, video ads are often being showed (desktop only). The damage to the site usability is very serious and I hope it's just a bug and that it will be solved as soon as possible. I will wait for Google answers.

You should be able to turn off video ads in your account, though I've never heard of that happening even on monetized matched content units.

In your AdSense account go to Blocking Controls, then choose "all sites" in the left sidebar, and then select "Ad Serving/Manage Ad Serving". On the resulting page you should be able to off VPAID ads - those are video ads.

Thanks for your reply, but this opt out does not apply to non-VPAID interactive video ads, e.g., TrueView video ads. Anyway I should not intervene on settings at global level of my account when the problem is that adsense is uploading videos to my matched content units where I have disabled the monetization option.

This is clearly a bug or if they are now obligate us to insert video advertisements in the matched content units they should have the decency to inform us about this change.

As I said UX is terrible now. I will remove adsense tomorrow if they not fix this awful thing.

Is this still happening?

Could you provide a url so I can try to reproduce?

This is still happening for me as of 5 Oct 0001 GMT. I tried creating a new matched content without ads  block and it's still playing massive videos at the bottom of my posts instead of my matched content. What is going on?

This is happening to me too. I would not have noticed so quickly had it not been reported here. This is the second recent change (since late August) that makes a long standing ad slot show incorrect (or empty) ads. AdSense is making changes that appear to have not been adequately tested.

My view of the Matched Content ads is that they are a way to keep people from leaving my site. The visitor got to the bottom of the page; if they arrived to answer a specific question or learn something specific, they may have no reason to stay. That's not good for me or for AdSense (or any advertiser on my site). Matched Content - by showing other pages that are also on the same or a related topic - can keep people engaged. A video ad unrelated to site content is less like to keep them. (This may not be true for every site, but it's true on mine; a site that has been online for more than 20 years, starting ad free).

I hope the "Experts" here will report this as a bug, introduced some time yesterday (from what I can see - I have multiple windows open and most of them had the video ad in place of the match content ad).

I already reported it, but I have no idea how long it would be before I hear any answer.

Gracey, that's good to hear. At this point the problem seems hard, and not intermittent. (Initially, caching might have caused some people to see some matched content ads and some video, but at least in my case it happens every time any of my pages are refreshed). Hopefully, the AdSense support team can take a look at it soon. Since it isn't intermittent, seeing the problem reproduced isn't a challenge.

The same here. At first it was rare, but now fills the matched content unit everytime the page is refreshed.

See my later post with a circumvention here:
https://support.google.com/adsense/thread/15945996?msgid=17116496

No change here either. Interestingly, when I pulled them my site earnings dropped to almost nothing so I put them back early today and my earnings shot up. I don't know what's going on because I can't imagine that my visitors are clicking on one of those videos, at least not at the rate that I got clicks. Maybe only some people are seeing videos, and we are a few of the "lucky" ones? And most of my site visitors are still seeing the Matched Content block, visiting another page on my site, and maybe seen an ad that is interesting to them there?

Is anybody who uses Matched Content ads (and not asking for any actual ads) still seeing the Matched Content block?

This is happening to our site as well, notice this am that there is video ad on top of our matched content box and we have NOT changed any of our settings in Ad Sense since July 2019.  All our video ads are turned off, yet this video unit is still appearing.

Please discontinue serving video ads until this bug is fixed

After 11 days this horrible bug is still here. I sent email to adsense support, they promise to respond within one business day, still after 11 days no answer. This bug is destroying our UX. I am disgusted by the total lack of respect for publishers.

Robert P: I posted a circumventioin about 30 hours before you posted the second time, but nobody said anything so I deleted it. Here is the brief version:

After further investigation I learned that I got the dreaded video only on computers; or, to be precise, only on computer sized windows. If I narrowed my window on computer to something under 960-ish, I got the matched content ad, and it always worked properly on phones and tablets. So my circumvention is to use the advice here: https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/7533385?hl=en . Specifically, I used the parameters shown for "Image and text side by side," which I believe is the mobile default. I could not get a computer layout to work (with a second set of parameters), but that may be because of the layout I chose and I had spent more than enough time getting rid of the videos, so I just use the single column on all devices. Play around with it and see if works for you.

I am disappointed and somewhat surprised that AdSense Support has not fixed this, or at least acknowledged that they were aware of the problem and working on it. It's an awful bug.
