Glossary of DAI terminology

You can use the Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) glossary to learn more about frequently used terms or features. Press Ctrl + F (Command ⌘ + F, for Mac) to find terms on this page.

See the full Glossary.

Content conditioning

The process of splitting content at the time of a mid-roll ad break, after the content provider has already packaged the content to the DAI provider to stream.

Learn more about content conditioning.

Content preconditioning

The process of splitting content at the time of a mid-roll ad break before the content provider has packaged the content to the DAI provider to stream.

Learn more about content preconditioning.

Cue point

A marker pointing to a precise time in the duration of a video. You can use cue points to trigger mid-roll ads.

Learn more about cue points.

IMA SDK

The IMA SDK, when used for Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) enables the player to request a video on demand (VOD) stream or linear (live) stream and send signals to Ad Manager for reporting. Event tracking with the SDK is more accurate than Server-Side Beaconing (SSB).

Learn more about IMA SDK.

Linear (live)

Live linear video originates from broadcast television content, called analog. Before digital ads can be inserted into the content, the content must be converted into digital format to be viewable on IP-enabled devices.

Learn more about (live) linear.

Server-Side Beaconing (SSB)

SSB allows an HLS player to make a direct HTTP request to the Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) system, where Ad Manager tracks and reports on video stream metrics based on estimates. Any player should be able to play an SSB stream, however feature support is limited.

Learn more about SSB.

Video on demand (VOD)

On-demand video may originate from broadcast television or digital content, but is already available in a digital format and can be viewed on IP-enabled devices.

Learn more about VOD.
