Hi,
Thanks for posting in Google  help forums,

To Find a lost Android phone / Erase data/ activate Lock / make ringing , the lost Android device must:

1, Be Powered on,
2, Have Location turned on
https://photos.app.goo.gl/LeTC1qfqpV6VaCZ26
3, Have Find My Device turned on,
https://photos.app.goo.gl/SbCyQdTU3Zxc2p4X8
4, Be signed in to a Google Account,

5, Be connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi,

6, Be visible on Google Play,
( Open the link  https://play.google.com/settings
select Edit> check in box> Update ),
You can add Android Device only here,

7,  Be checked in  " Data from this Device " in Lost  / other Device for this Account,

NOTE, This REMOTE checking facility is available through another Android phone Only,
( If the box is unchecked at the time of lost, it's not possible to Locate Device in Desktop computers, but you can " check" with Android phone as see above)Next
Open the link in an Android phone,

https://www.google.com/android/find?u=0
OR,

Open Find my device App in Android phone,

Tap / Click on the picture and select Account in case of multiple accounts or, Sign as a guest,

Next,Select Device from Signed in Devices for this Account for now,
Select your choice Lock / Erase / Ring / X / ,
If it's already locked, you will not see New  Lock options,

If a Lock Screen is Set up for Device,
Device will be locked with this passcode,
Once locked, It's not possible to Remove or Override this Lock  with another Code through Find my device,

It's possible to change / Override Lock Screen message through Find my device,

You can Erase Data even though Find my device and Location is turned off,

Well, gee I guess that wasn't very helpful at all since she said it was a friend's phone! IAM trying to do the same thing she was. If you try to do it the way you suggested, one would have to add that person's account AND be able to verify it through their PHONE NUMBER; which is not going to happen since the person's phone is LOST.
