Click on the 4 lines in top left corner.
Scroll down to setting
Click General settings
Click Default notification action
Change from Archive to Delete
You can also change the Swipe Actions for Right and Left Swipe

GOOGLE, fix this! Archive just creates email mess that I don't need and won't tolerate.

i have an iphone x, while in your email, click the 3 (or 4 if it shows up) lines on the top left side. once there, you'll see drafts/all mail/trash etc., click on settings on the bottom. once in settings, it will show you all the email accounts you. you should also see swipe actions and you can change your settings there. it worked for me, hope that works for you.

Remember to skip over the first article titled: Check for the Latest Version of Gmail
The summary is below. The link above includes images:
- From either the home screen or app drawer, tap the "Gmail" icon.
- With the Gmail app open, tap the hamburger menu icon in the top left corner, followed by "Settings".
- While on the Settings screen, tap "General settings".
- From the General settings screen, tap "Swipe actions".
- To edit the Right swipe action, tap the "CHANGE" link. When the pop-up appears, select one of the actions from the list. Select "None" if you don't want anything to happen when you swipe right on an email message.
- To change the Left swipe action, tap "CHANGE". When the pop-up options appear, select an action. If you wish for nothing to happen when you swipe left on an email, select "None".
