I selected that it was me but it keeps blocking access to my Linux Thunderbird client. I even changed the settings from imap to pop and back. it still wont let it access it gives warnings on my other devices it's been block as an unauthorized device. But, I've been using that client for years and been using that version for a few years. I don't like web access, I like to download and archive my Email. Thunderbird is the only dependable client for linux Mint. Password is correct as it warns me that someone is using my password on an unauthorized device. Changing it would seem moot.

I'll add that while mine isn't blocked GMail is continuously prompting me for my GMail credentials through Thunderbird. I already went to the web and signed in there, and verified that TBird is one of the authorized programs to access my email. Can this be looked into? Would hate to think GMail is falling into the same category as Facebook...Twitter and other platforms that have been breached or hacked and then didn't do anything for days at a time!!

So Google pesters me to turn off access for "less secure apps" which I do, and which of course kills Thunderbird.  After 20 wasted minutes I find out how to give Thunderbird access again.

The illogical and insecure thing however is that Google demands I either give all apps access or none.  There appears to be no way to only allow Thunderbird access.  So why is that?  Why all or none security settings?

This should be fixed.

You only need "less secure apps" access for POP.  You can use OAuth2 authentication for IMAP and SMTP in Thunderbird, so I recommend switching unless you must use POP.

There is no way to only allow "less secure apps" access for specific apps, because there is no way to identify the app that is signing in with simple password authentication.  (With OAuth2, you do authorise or revoke each app separately.)

If you want a more secure option with POP,  you can enable 2-step verification on your Google account and use an App Password.

So if I understand correctly, the only way to make Google stop bugging me about "insecure apps" is to convert from POP to IMAP, which is to say that I must leave all my email on your server and cannot down load it to my own computer for off line use?

I really don't want to keep all my email forever on a server I don't control.  If it disappears from your server that would be a fiasco.

JFC what a pain in the ass this has become. In order to get my T-bird working again with POP, I had to enable 2-step verification which then allowed me to create a 16-character App Password that T-bird uses instead of my Google password. I believe this was all started by a text I received from 244444 saying that Google was verifying my phone number and provided a goo.gl shortened/obfuscated link for more info. That led me to use my laptop to see what was going on and I fell into google support k-hole which then led me to block access to some older, unrelated apps on my phone, I thought. Apparently, one of the things I must've blocked included the IP address generated by my VPN. My laptop was still on the OK list somehow, though my VPN works through my router. Whatever. Seems like a lot of bullshit to go through for an email client but I've been using Thunderbird for almost 20 years (the majority of those with Gmail) and I'm not about to give that up. Google, please fix your relationship with VPN's.

I turned on "allow access for less secure apps" and Thunderbird still gets the same stupid "sending of password... did not succeed". This is damned annoying. Thunderbird has been working for years, why has Google suddenly and arbitrarily decided to lock me out of my own account even when Thunderbird submits the correct password?

Will someone from Google please tell me what has to be done to let me back into my own account?

I've got exactly the same problem but I was always using IMAP. It accepts the password but then shortly afterwards prompts for it again.

WHoop wHooP! I'm back in - what a treat!
My solution:
In Gmail/Google Security Settings Turn On: Allow less secure apps

In Thunderbird: Security Settings >Authentication method (changed OAuth2 to Normal Password)
Make sure you also go into your Outgoing Server Folder at the bottom of your thunderbird settings window where you see all your mailboxes listed and update the outgoing passwords as well!

I had multiple accounts that I was locked out of in Thunderbird so I had to slow down this process and do 1 at a time and wait a while in between. I could not fix them all at the same time.
