Thanks for posting in Google Account help forums,
To Find a lost Android phone / Erase data/ activate Lock, the lost Android device must:
Be turned on
Have Location turned on
Have Find My Device turned on,
Be signed in to a Google Account,
Be connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi,
Be visible on Google Play,( Open the link and check in the box next to the Device name to visible in Google play)

Next
Open the link,

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3265955?hl=en
Tap / Click on the picture and select Account in case of multiple accounts,
Or,Go to Manage Account > Manage Account> ADD Account > Select Google> Add Account,
Next,Select Device from Signed in Devices for this Account for now,

If phone is not formatted and it have active internet connection you might have changes to trace the device. As per How to track phone from IMEI, you can get access to device location using google accounts.
