Someone else is using my phone number for their google account 0 Recommended Answers 64 Replies 601 Upvotes

I just discovered that someone has created a new Google account using my phone number. This is causing my trouble with sign-ins and so on, because my password is no longer associated with my phone number. There are no signs that my account has otherwise been hacked - there's just a new Gmail address associated with my phone number.

How do I take back the phone number association? Why did I not get a notification on my phone when someone registered a gmail account with my phone number? How do I find out the full email address of the other account associated with my phone number?

FTR, I tried re-verifying my phone number, but the option wasn't available.

If all you have to say, btw, is "Nope, nothing you can do" without elaboration or new information, please don't bother. That's where I'm at right now, so telling me that doesn't help.

Eric,

It isn't a "Gmail address associated with my phone number". Its rather "a phone number associated with my Gmail address". Someone adding your phone number to their email address would not remove it from yours. And this is going to cause more trouble for them than for you, as any verification  codes being sent to them, will come to you instead. Actually I don't even think they could've used your phone number during account creation,  as I'm sure you wouldn't have sent them the verification code to input where necessary.

  1. As I already stated, it already HAS caused me a problem (albeit a minor one)
  2. As I already stated, someone DID register my phone number with their gmail without me approving it - saying that it's impossible is obviously not the case, since, once again, it happened
  3. I want it taken care of because I'm having issues with people using my phone number for things, and I don't want my phone number used for spoofing
  4. I'm not sure how this answer was supposed to be helpful.
I'm really not trying to sound ungrateful or obnoxious here, but telling me that it couldn't have happened when it did is the opposite of helpful.

While it is possible to create an email account without a phone number, and then come back and add one later, it would not cause that number to drop off of any other account. I'll discuss this with my forum colleagues and get back to you.

Eric,

We're puzzled when you say "my password is no longer associated with my phone number". What do you really mean there?

Also, how long did you have this email account? And how long did you own that telephone number? It is possible that someone else owned the number before you, and is still slightly confused.

What I mean is that when I tried to log into Google on a new installation of Firefox, I put in my phone number instead of my email address. I was then asked for my password. Google said my password was wrong, so I clicked "forgot my password" even though I was sure it was right. This took me to the screen where it says it sent a notification to a gmail address, and the address shown wasn't mine.

So, I guess what I meant is that my phone number is no longer associated with my account - except in my account details it still is, and it's listed as one of my recovery options. I just can't use it to log in because someone else is using it for their account for some reason I can't quite fathom.

I'm actually not sure how long I've had this account - several years, probably around 10. I've had the phone number for, I think, three years. I do occasionally get calls for someone who had this phone number before me, but the change with Google is recent, so I'm not sure how they could still be confused. It's possible, I guess, but even if that's the case, it's still a problem.

Thanks for the follow-up Eric. Personally, I've never been able to log in with my phone number although the Sign In page gives that option. Can you sign in with no problem using your email address and password?

Yeah, I'm all signed in. I actually usually use my phone number to sign in most of the time. I just don't like someone else using my phone number, and I would very much like it fixed. I don't know what to do, and I guess I need to accept that maybe "nothing" is the answer, but I can't help but feel like Google should require phone numbers to be verified annually.

Yes, Google does indeed re-verify your security information at regular intervals. You should occasionally get an email asking you to confirm your phone number and alternative email address matches what they have on record. If it does, you say Yes. And if not, you go ahead and update.

Meanwhile I'm continuing the escalated discussion about your case. Will get back to you later.

I bet google will do nothing. Since they use personal numbers of people without consent and place them on google sites. They won’t bother to help you. I had been seeking their help but no response for months now. It’s really harassing. Google says they don’t publish personal information for security but they do without you knowing it.
