How can I ensure Google never again incorrectly thinks my Google Account is inactive?

I get Emails from Google every so often, reminding me about my Inactive Account setting.
So when I got such an Email from Google in the first 2 weeks of April, it worried me (as it always does), then I checked everything and thought no more about it.
Either a Day, or a few Hours later I am signed out of my Google account on all my Devices, and all services that have access to my Google Account. That made me panic, so I changed my Google Account password immediately and signed back into my Google account everywhere, immediately.
Today, (around 2 weeks later) I get an Email from the Google Accounts Team, telling me that,
earlier this Month I received an Email on the Inactive status of my Google Account and that as a result of that I was signed out of my Google Account across all devices/browsers.
Then the Email from Google tells me that the notification was in Error and Google apologies for the inconvenience.
It further says, that I can now sign back into my Google Account and continue using Google services as normal.
Then the Email proceeds to inform me what to do if I have any issue signing back into my Account.
Now,
I signed back into my Google Account as soon as I was signed out, around 2 weeks ago.
I also today, signed out and back in again on the Google Chrome browser on pc and mobile and also on Gmail on pc.

But how can I make sure my Google Account won't be mistakenly thought inactive again.
I watch YouTube every day and I search with Google, or Google Chrome browser regularly, my YouTube watch history, is even stored on my Google Account (but until today only my YouTube watch history, I have now activated Web and App activity too).

Is there anything else I can do, to make sure that the good people at Google know my Google Account is an active Google Account?

Any good Advice would be extremely welcome, please help.
Thank you!

Hi Sandra Mo.  I too had this sudden sign-out issue that sent me into a mild meltdown. Like yourself I signed back into my account on my various devices and complained bitterly to anyone who'd listen.

I understand this was a bug that affected many people but for those of us who have the required recovery options in place and who remember our account credentials, it was little more than an inconvenience and a concern that something sinister was occurring. However I understand this was a simple error that shouldn't happen again.

Of course no one can be certain errors won't occur in the future, as happens with all things tech so we should all be aware that we must keep our account details up to date and backup our important files elsewhere so that should the worst happen, our losses will be mitigated.

Hopefully 'lessons have been learned' and we'll be spared unnecessary worry in future.

I can't really add anything else to my previous posts as I'm only speaking from personal experience. I too, along with many others, was signed out of my account and was mildly alarmed and irritated at having to sign into my account on the devices I use regularly.  However, I entered my password, received a message on my phone and immediately regained access.  I had to do this with three tablets, two phones, a  Windows machine and a Chromebook. 🙄

I never sign out of my account and use a PIN instead of a password.  I do, however, secure access to my individual devices. By remaining signed in I would imagine the system might recognise my account as being active.

Just please commit your password and email address to memory and/or use a third-party Password Manager - I use LastPass Premium that does a good deal more than just saves passwords.

Even with everything in place, glitches will happen but hopefully all that will be necessary is a simple sign-in as on this latest occasion.

Thank you very much for your reply Penelope R. , it is reassuring to know that it was just a bug 😀.

However, what happened, made me want to do all I can to ensure Google will always be able to easily tell, that my Google Account is very much an active Account.

That's why I asked if anyone would have any Ideas, what I could do, to make sure, the good People at Google find it easy to tell my Account is active.

All need to do is to make sure you're signed into your account regularly and have more than one device listed, such as a phone with a current, accessible number to which verification codes can be sent, a computer or tablet and a Gmail account that you use regularly, plus a separate email address you can use for account recovery. The latter should be a secure email client and not a 'throwaway' Internet type.

Download, write down and keep with you, a set of ten, 8-digit backup codes that you can use whenever you need them. "Sign in with backup codes - Computer - Google Account Help" https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1187538?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop

Never forget your account password, email address or PIN if you use one. This should ensure you will always be able to satisfy Google's system that you are the legitimate owner of your account should such a bug ever affect you again.

I do appreciate your help, but,
I am very confused, I'm sorry!

I am extremely clueless and panicked.

What is a secure Email client, and what is an internet "throwaway" type?
I can't afford to pay some company for an Email address.
My only other Email address is a free of charge Outlook one I got on the Internet.

I have never heard of a non Internet Email and would have no Idea where to find one. Also I can't afford to pay for an Email address

And what are 10 eight digit Backup codes and where would I find them?

Could you please, Please explain.

Thank you!

There are lots of insecure email clients on the 'Net that can be used for one-off registrations for websites and never used again. I had several at one time.  It's not necessary to pay for a secure email address, you could use an Outlook account (Hotmail) that you can use free of charge with ads or you can pay for ad-free.  Do bear in mind that a current phone number will always take precedence over all other recovery options. Gmail Will naturally be considered the most secure mail client by Google.

Please log into your account regularly to check your information is up to date and you can also check your online and account activity.

The latest sign-out issue was a bug and shouldn't happen again so don't worry too much. Providing you know your password you should always be able to sign in using a device the system recognises as belonging to you.

Once again, thank you for your help! 😀

As I said, my other Email address is Outlook, from what you said that should be fine.

However, you did originaly mention:
"Download, write down and keep with you, a set of ten, 8-digit backup codes that you can use whenever you need them. ..."

And I wasn't sure where to get those, I have figured that out just now where to generate those 10 eight digit backup codes in my Google Account, but I am wondering, if you might know how long do they remain valid?

And lastly, about your excellent Idea about those Google electronic Key things. The lunk you so kindly provided (than you for that by the way) doesn't mention price, would you by chance have an idea about the cost?

Thank you

I don't know anything about the physical security keys and you would need to run a Internet search for information.

The security codes remain valid until you use them.  You can, if you wish, download another set any time you like that will overwrite the first set.  Each 8-digit code can be used once only.  I've never needed to use mine but it's good to know they're handy if I ever do.  Please be sure not to do as some have done and keep the codes in Drive or another Google app that requires being signed in to access. 😏

You might like to keep a note of the link to the Google Account Help Centre that has all the information you need to keep your account safe. The pages should be updated from time to time as security requirements change.

Hi Penelope R.

Thank you for your reply, sorry it took so long to respond to your reply.

1.  Only asked about the physical Keys price, because of the link about them in a previous message of yours in this message thread.

2. Thank you for answering my question about the 10 eight digit codes, I agree with you about keeping copies of those codes in a safe always accessible place only.

3. I really thank you for your patience and help, but could you please help me about my original question 🙏!?
Do you know if there is anything I could do, that I haven't done already, in order to make it easier for the good people at Google to see that my Google Account is very much an active Account, please?

As always I thank you for your help so far (and for your patience).
I hope you can please help me, by answering my original question, as summed up in point three.

Thank you, Kind regards

I can't help with the price of any specific physical keys as I've never bought or used them, nor have I used an authenticator app.  I do carry a set of backup codes when I'm out and about in case I should need one of them.  I make sure I'm signed into my account all the time on at least two of my devices.  I do not clear cookies on my devices (phones, tablets, Chromebook) so that none will appear to Google as being 'new.' I check my account activity regularly and use my account all day every day.  There is nothing more I can do to show the system that I have an active account.

I should point out that I'm just an ordinary account user like yourself who enjoys helping other account users in my own time. If I need specific account information, I will run a search of the Google A/c help centre or a general Internet search, such as:https://www.techradar.com/uk/best/best-security-key.

I hope that answers your questions.

Hi Penelope R.

Don't worry about physical security Key question, it's just that a few email notifications that I got of your reply, have a Google link at the bottom (copy of link incuded here for information purpose) and one of those links was:
"
"Get Google's strongest account security with the Advanced Protection Program - Android - Google Account Help" https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/7519408?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid
"
I mistakenly thought that link came from you as part of your reply, sorry!

Your Advice is excellent, I thought you worked for Google, sorry 🙂.
 Could you please tell me,

other than switching on my App History, as I have now done
and signing in to my Google Account from my Phone and Pc regularly as I believe you recommended, do you think there is there anything else that I could do to make it as easy as possible for the good People at Google, to see that my Google Account is very much an active Account?
Or do you think I have already done all that I can (I now access my Google Account daily on phone and Pc, as per advice).

As that would answer my original question.

I await your reply as soon as you can.

Kind regards
Sandra
