Manage your Google Account password

Your Google Account password is the same password you use for other Google products, like Gmail and YouTube.

Forgot password

If you don’t know your Google Account password, follow these steps to set a new one.

  1. Go to the trouble signing in page.
  2. Select “I don’t know my password.”
  3. Enter your email address and follow the instructions on the screen.
Change password

You can change your Google Account password at any time. We recommend that you change it regularly to keep your account more secure.

  1. Sign in to your Google account settings page.
  2. In the Signing in section, select Password.
  3. Follow the instructions to change your password.

Important: If you're running Android 5.1 or higher on your device and need to do a factory reset, you need to wait 72 hours after changing your password to reset your device. For security purposes, you can't use an account if the password was changed within 72 hours to set up the device after reset. Learn about how to protect your device.

Password requirements

Google Account passwords must be at least 8 characters long. They can include:

  • Uppercase and lowercase letters. Passwords are case-sensitive, so "G" is different from "g."
  • Numbers
  • These symbols: ! " # $ % & ‘ ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ { | } ~
  • Spaces: You can't use a space at the beginning or end of your password, but spaces inside the password are fine.

Keep in mind, you won’t be able to reuse a password from the past year. We’ve also blocked some passwords that are easy to guess, like “12345678.”
