How shared endorsements work

Google sometimes displays your reviews, recommendations, and other relevant activity in its products and services. This may include shopping contexts, like Google Play, and ads. The profile name and profile photo of your account may appear with that activity.

For example, if you search for "Italian restaurants," you may see an ad for a nearby restaurant along with someone’s favorable review. Or, in Google Play, you may see that someone else has reviewed a new song or album.

We call these shared endorsements.

Here are a few examples of shared endorsements on Google. The "Summertime Spas" example shows a shared endorsement displayed in an ad:

You get to decide whether you want your name, photo, and activity included in shared endorsements that appear in ads through the "Shared endorsements" page. And for users under 18, actions won't appear in shared endorsements in ads and certain other contexts. The shared endorsements setting isn't available for Google Accounts for kids under 13.

How to turn shared endorsements in ads on or off:

  1. Sign in to your Google Account. If you came to this page while still creating your account, finish that process first, then come back here.
  2. Go to Shared endorsements.
  3. To allow people to see your name, photo, and activity in shared endorsements in ads, check the box next to "Based upon my activity, Google may show my profile name, profile photo, and activity in shared endorsements in ads."
  4. If you'd like to turn this setting off, just uncheck the box. Remember, unchecking the box means that Google won't be able to share your recommendations in some cases where others might otherwise see and benefit from them.
