Why Google asks for your information when you create an account

A Google Account gives you access to services such as Gmail and YouTube. We ask for some personal information when you create an account in order to keep your account secure and to make our services more useful. To learn more about how Google uses this data, read the Google Privacy Policy.

Here are some tips on how to fill out certain fields.

Enter the name you want to use across Google services. When you create content that you want to share with others, your name will appear with this content.

Create a username, which will also be your new Gmail address, to sign in to your Google Account. Your username isn't case sensitive, and you can use letters, numbers, or periods. We'll help you out with some suggestions if you're having trouble finding a username you like.

To help keep your account secure:

  • Choose a strong password.
  • Do not use a password you already use on another site.
  • Do not reuse this password on another site.
  • Use at least eight characters.
Date of birth

Some Google services have specific age requirements. Other people won't see your age unless you share it publicly.

Other people won't see your gender unless you share it publicly. Learn more about how Google uses your gender.

Mobile phone

If you have a mobile phone, this field is optional but recommended. Depending on how you add a phone number to your account, your phone number can be used across different Google services. For example, if you forget your password, a recovery phone number can help you get back into your account.

To see and manage how your phone number is used, visit your "Phone" page in My Account.

Current email address

Current email address should be an additional email address, such as an address you used before signing up for your Google Account. For new Google Account users, providing this address allows for useful features including helping people find you, aiding in account security and recovery, and providing an alternate address for notifications from Google services.

You can update this email address on your "Email" page in My Account.

Enter your country or territory of residence in this field.

To control what others see about you across Google services, visit About me.
