Use braille keystrokes

Important: You don’t need BrailleBack to connect to a braille display.

You can use keystrokes for devices with braille input keys. Keystrokes might vary by braille display device. The keystrokes we provide are common to most displays. However, your display may have additional keystrokes not listed here. To determine the keystrokes for your specific braille display, go to TalkBack Settings and then Braille display and then Braille commands.

Customize braille display commands

Important: To change braille display commands, you have to connect a braille display and turn on TalkBack.

You can customize the braille display commands for your braille display. You can also reset a command to the default state, even if it’s currently unassigned.

To customize braille display commands:

  1. Open the TalkBack menu.
  2. Select TalkBack Settings and then Braille display and then Braille display commands.
  3. Select a category.
    • Basic controls: Pan and activate
    • Navigation: Move between items
    • System actions: Back, home, notification, and more

  4. Under the category page, select the action you want to customize.
  5. Select Change command.
  6. Press the braille action you want to use as the new command.
  7. To confirm the change, perform the same command again.

You can also reset or remove a command.

  • To go back to the default command, select Reset to default.
  • To remove command, select Remove command.

If you encounter errors while you customize commands:

  • If the new command you select is currently used, select Replace.
  • If the command you input doesn't match, to confirm the change, press the same command again.
