Chat

You can hide chats that you no longer want to see, and you can delete your chat history. You can also set up notifications to receive alerts when new chats appear.
 

Hide or delete direct message conversations

Hide a direct message conversation

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. At the bottom, tap Chat "".
  3. Tap the person's name or group.
  4. At the top, tap the person’s name or groupand thenHide conversation.
Note: If you hide a chat and then chat with that person or group again, your chat history reappears (if it's turned on).

Delete a direct message conversation

You can delete all your history of a conversation you had with someone. You can't delete your history for group conversations with 2 or more people.

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. At the bottom, tap Chat "".
  3. Tap the person's name.
  4. At the top, tap the person's nameand then Delete conversation.
  5. Tap Delete to confirm.

To delete only a single message you sent, see edit or delete a message.

Turn Chat notifications on or off

You can choose whether to receive notifications for conversations, or just for @mentions and direct messages. And, if you haven’t read a conversation in 12 hours, you can get an email notification sent to you.

Change notifications in Chat

For all conversations

  1. Open the Chat app "".
  2. At the top left, tap Menu "" and then Settings.
  3. Select your account.
  4. Under "Notifications," turn Mobile notifications on or off.
Tip: Touch and hold a conversation for more options.

For a specific 1:1 message

  1. Open the Chat app "".
  2. Open a direct message with an individual.
  3. Tap the person’s name.
  4. Turn the button next to “Notifications” on or off.

Turn notification sounds on or off

  1. Open the Chat app "".
  2. At the top left, tap Menu "" and then Settings
  3. Select your account.
  4. Under "Notifications," tap Notification sounds.
  5. Pick the notification sound you want to use.

Tip: To turn off notification sounds, select None.

For a specific space or group conversation

  1. Open the Chat app "".
  2. Open a space or conversation.
  3. At the top, next to the space or group message, tap the Right arrow Right arrow.
  4. Tap Notifications and select an option: 
    • Notify always: Get push notifications and a notification dot for all new messages. 
    • Notify less: Get push notifications and a notification dot when you're @mentioned, a followed thread gets a new message, or if someone uses @all. 
      • For spaces with threads: To receive a notification when someone starts a new thread, check the box next to “Also notify for the first message of new threads.” 
    • Notifications off: You won't get any push notifications, but @mentions and @all will continue to get a notification dot.

Tip: If you turn off notifications, you still get notifications for @mentions and direct messages.

Change notifications in Gmail

For all conversations

  1. Open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings.
  3. Select your account.
  4. Under "Notifications," turn Chat notifications on or off.

For a specific 1:1 message

  1. Open the Gmail app .
  2. Tap the Chat tab. 
  3. Tap the name of the person to open the conversation.
  4. At the top, next to the name of the person, tap the Right arrow Right arrow.
  5. Turn Notifications on or off.

For a specific space or group conversation

  1. Open the Gmail app "".
  2. At the bottom, tap the Chat or Spaces tab.
  3. Tap the name of the space or the group direct message to open a conversation.
  4. At the top, tap the space name and then Notifications.
  5. Choose an option:
  • Notify always: Get push notifications and a notification dot for all new messages.
  • Notify less: Get push notifications and a notification dot when you’re @mentioned; a thread you follow gets a new message; or if someone in the conversation uses “@all.”
    • For spaces with threads: To receive a notification when someone starts a new thread, turn on Also notify for the first message of new threads.
  • Notifications off: You won’t get any push notifications, but @mentions & @all will continue to get a notification dot.

Tip: Even if you turn off notifications, you'll still get a red notification dot for @mentions and direct messages. 

Turn chat notification sounds on or off in Gmail

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings Settings.
  3. Select your account.
  4. Under "Notifications", tap Notification sounds.   
  5. Tap Email or Chat and spaces. When sounds are turned on, you'll see the name of the sound.
  6. Choose the sound you want to use. 
  7. To turn off notification sounds, tap None.

Understand how badges appear in direct messages

Red dot icon Status text Status meaning
Yes Bold There are unread individual direct messages or group direct messages.
No Normal These conversations have no updates or new messages.

In the navigation bar at the bottom, a number in the red dot over the Chat icon shows the total number of unread direct messages.

Understand how badges appear in spaces

Red dot icon Status text Status meaning
Yes Bold There are unread messages that directly mention you, or you turned on notifications.
No Bold These conversations are unread, don't directly mention you, or you turned off notifications.
No Normal These conversations have no updates or new messages.

In the navigation bar at the bottom, a number in the red dot over the Spaces icon shows the total number of unread spaces that notify you.

Do not disturb (mute notifications)

If you want to work uninterrupted you can temporarily hide notifications.

Mute notifications in Chat

  1. Open the Chat app "".
  2. At the top left, tap Menu ""and thenDo not disturb.
  3. Select a time period.
    Notifications automatically turn back on after the mute period expires.
  4. (Optional) To stop muting, tap Menu ""and thenTurn off Do Not Disturb.

Mute Chat notifications in Gmail

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. At the top left, tap Menu "" and then Down arrow "" and then Do not disturb.
  3. Under “Mute notifications for,” select a time period.
  • Notifications automatically turn back on after the mute period expires.
  • To end mute sooner, tap Menu "" and then Down arrow "" and then Automatic.

Tip: Touch and hold a conversation for more options.

Save chats

In Chat, if your organization allows it, you can use the history setting to change whether chats are saved. If history is turned off, messages are deleted after 24 hours.

When anyone in the chat turns history on or off, all chat members see:

  • A note in the message stream that history was turned on or off
  • A History on or History off prompt in the compose box

Note: History is always on in spaces.

Messages you forward to your Gmail inbox will remain in your email, even if chat history is turned off.

Turn history on or off in Chat or Gmail

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. Select a Chat conversation.
  3. At the top, next to the conversation name, tap the Right arrow"".
  4. In Conversation Options, next to History, tap On "" or Off "".
Block and report someone

If you don't want to chat with someone in Chat, you can block them. You can block direct messages, but you can't block people in group messages or in spaces.

When you block someone:

  • If the person you blocked is in your organization, they can still see when you're online.
  • The person you blocked can see that they can't send you messages.
  • Neither you or the person you blocked can edit your messages to one another.
  • The person you blocked is also blocked in certain other Google services.
  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. At the bottom, tap Chat "".
  3. In your Chat list, tap the name of the person.
  4. At the top, tap the name of the person.
  5. Tap Block & Report "".
    • If you use a Google Workspace account and the person is in your organization, this option is Block.
    • Optional: To report the person for abuse, check the box next to "Also report." If you use a Google Workspace account, you can only report people outside of your organization.
  6. To confirm, tap Block.

Links or attachments the person sent before you blocked them are still active. To send the person a message, you need to unblock them.

When you report someone for abuse, a copy of the last 10 messages of your conversation is sent to Google for review.

Unblock someone

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. At the bottom, tap Chat "".
  3. Tap New chat "".
  4. Enter the name of the blocked person or their email address.
  5. Select the person from the suggestions.
  6. Tap Unblock "".

Tip: You can also unblock someone in Chat by going to Settingsand thenBlockedand thenManage accounts you have blocked. Tap RemoveClosenext to the person that you blocked.
