When you add instructions in your personalization settings, Gemini in Workspace uses the instructions you provide to give you tailored and relevant responses in Docs. For example, you can create instructions so that Gemini can do things like:
- Start responses with a short summary.
- Use bullet points for long paragraphs.
- Write task lists with assigned priority levels.
What you need
Important: This feature is only available in the US and in English.
- For personal Google Accounts:
- For work or school accounts: You need an eligible Google Workspace plan with access to Gemini Alpha.
- If you use a work or school account, your admin controls access to Gemini Alpha.
- If you can't find personalization settings, your admin may not have Alpha features enabled for your organization.
How instructions work
- Instructions are on by default in your personalization settings, but you can turn them off.
- You can create up to 1,000 active instructions for Gemini.
- When you add instructions, Gemini can adapt its response to your:
- Role: “I am a high school teacher.”
- Preferred tone: “Remember to use a professional but enthusiastic tone for my document.”
- Format: “Always summarize my files in bullet points.”
- To check if your instructions are used in a response:
- Below the response, select Sources.
- Under “Personalization settings,” look for your instructions in the list of sources. Learn how to use sources with Google Workspace with Gemini.
Add instructions for Gemini
- To add instructions in your settings:
- On your computer, open Google Docs.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini
.
- At the top left of the Gemini side panel, click Menu

- Click Add.
- Enter your instructions.
- Click Save.
- To add instructions when you chat with Gemini:
- When you use instructional phrases, Gemini automatically saves the instruction to your settings. For example, you can say:
- “From now on, always use short sentences in your responses.”
- “In the future, remember that I prefer summaries in a table format.”

Turn your instructions on or off
- On your computer, open Google Docs.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini
.
- At the top left of the Gemini side panel, click Menu

- Turn Your instructions for Gemini in Workspace on or off.
- When off, Gemini provides standard responses. Your saved instructions remain in the list but aren’t used or deleted.
Delete instructions
Important: After you delete an instruction, it’s permanent and can’t be undone.
- On your computer, open Google Docs.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini
.
- At the top left of the Gemini side panel, click Menu

- To remove specific instructions: Next to the instruction, click Delete
.
- To remove all instructions when you have at least 10 instructions: Click Delete all.
- To remove specific instructions: Next to the instruction, click Delete
