Use mail commands to interact with groups

Communicate quickly with group owners, managers, or members by adding commands to the addresses of email messages you send to a group. To join or leave a group, you can also use commands, which let you interact with a group without accessing Google Groups. This is useful if, for example, you know a group’s email address but don’t have permission to view the group on the web.

The mail command address format is [group name]+[command]@[group domain]. For example, to join the group mygroup@mygroups.com, you would send a message to mygroup+subscribe@mygroup.com.

Command Use to... Notes
+subscribe Join the group.

You receive a confirmation email with a link. To confirm membership in the group or send a join request to the owner (depending on the group’s settings), you can either:

  • Reply to the email.
  • Click the link in the email, which takes you to the group page. If prompted, follow the instructions to finish joining the group.

You can send the request with no subject or body text. The request is sent only if you have permission to join the group. You don’t receive any notification if the request isn’t sent.

+unsubscribe Leave the group. You can send the request with no subject or body text. The request is processed regardless of your specific permissions within the group.

+manager
+managers

Send a message to the group managers and owners only.

Both commands work the same.

Your message is sent only if you have posting permissions to the group. If not, you receive an email notification.

+owner
+owners

Send a message to the group owners only.

Both commands work the same.

Your message is sent only if you have posting permissions to the group. If not, you receive an email notification.
