I cannot add an alternative email with a domain alias I have set up.
I have created a domain alias. Verified with Google. Set up MX records with domain host.
I go to user - user information - alternative email:
There is a note below that the alternative email with the domain alias is available.
But when I create the alternative email the domain alias domain is not available, only my main domain.
What is not working here and how can I get it to work?

Hello,
To create users for your other domain, you will need to add your other domain as secondary domain, not domain alias. Kindly refer to this help article for more info: https://support.google.com/a/answer/7502379

Thanks for your reply,
Alternative domains are not possible in the legacy Google Apps suite, which is free.
Usually you can create an alternative email address to the original email address for a user and then send/receive via that alternative address (using a domain alias).
It's just that the domain alias is not working. I have verified it, updated MX records 24 hours ago - still nothing. Alternative email address only has one choice: my original domain.

Hello,
Usually you can create an alternative email address to the original email address for a user and then send/receive via that alternative address (using a domain alias).
When you create the original email address, the alias domain is attached to the original email address automatically. There is no way to manually create account for the alias domain.

Thanks, E.J.
When I go to alternative email there is a GRAYED OUT not that the alternative email address is available.
When I try to set up this alternative email address Apple Mail reports that this account does not exist.
If it is created automatically, how can I use it? I have done it before but the process seems to be counterintuitive - looking at the interface gives you no clue on how to do it and how to use or activate this alternative email address.

Hello,
When you created an user for original domain for example a@originaldomain.com, the alias account for the original domain a@aliasdomain will be created for that user automatically. There is nothing need to be done to activate it. You may try to send mail to the alias domain account, you will receive in the original domain account.
If you want to be able to manually create and manage users for the alias domain, you will need to add it as secondary domain not alias domain. Adding secondary domain feature is no longer available for legacy free edition; you will need to upgrade to paid edition to use the secondary domain feature.

Thanks, E.J., but how do I send an email from the alias address?
When I try to establish an account with the alias address Apple Mail says: "this account does not exist"

I have set up the email alias in Apple Mail and can send from it.
But the receiver does not see the alias address. Only the original address.
On google apps side:
In the user account it says email@aliasdomain is available for the user - but it is grayed out and cannot be activated.
On Apple Mail side:
You can add an alias there, but the receiver does not see it.
I have wasted 5 hours just to get one email address working, tried everything. IT DOES NOT WORK! It's this labyrinth of countless sub-menus none of which does anything.

Hello,
It is part of the limitation. Domain alias addresses is not an account, it is just a mail forwarding address to the primary domain; it is similar to email aliases. Hence, there are limitations compare to an actual account.
