Would be nice if Google had worked on this like others, the only thing that does not currently work on an M1 mac we are testing for all our corporate apps is google filestream (and backup and sync by google), not one other application issue with dozens of apps.

We pay google, this is not a free service. Since they are not able to keep up with the surprise of apple only giving half a year of notice, the least they could do is publish a roadmap for customer planning.

We have had to stop ordering MacBook Airs and shift to old-Intel pros because of this delay, this is not a minor inconvenience. That option will likely go away before too long as well.

Other than shifting to another product, anybody know a workaround?

@Webb Deneys same here. It's a business tool where we rely on. A shame Google hasn't anticipated more.

Google did release an ARM version of Chrome almost instantly

Same here, as an IT service provider and official Google Workspace partner, we already had clients that bought M1 Mac and are unable to use file stream... Google needs to fix this ASAP

I'm joining this conversation as well.
I have a couple hundred media files (video format - a couple hundred GB) that typically just sync one at a time via GDFS. The work I need to be doing this week is suddenly halted and locked down. NONE of my GDFS apps are functioning at all.
This is totally not cool.

This is crazy.  Come on google, get it together.  We purchased M1's and can't deploy.  Higher ups are talking of switching cloud providers.

Same problem here... Really frustrating. Google should at least let us know when we can expect this to be fixed.

Indeed not cool at all. Please have someone at Google send out a statement indicating when they expect a fix.

Action please! I pay for Google Workspace but can't use it on Macs with Big Sure and M1 chip.

Indeed not cool at all. If this is a free app, it is undertsanadble. This is a business app and should ensure productivity.

How far we've come. An OS that is 12 days GA old on a new computing platform that is a little over a week old GA.

I get it, we want the latest and greatest, but issue your users the intel versions until the ARM platform stabilizes. As an enterprise, you're riding the bleeding edge and complain when you start to bleed a little.

Don't get me wrong, I'm on this thread because I bought an M1 MBP and I would like a working version, but I also knew what I signed up for. You're not prevented from working on drive files, the experience is just a little inconvenient until a working version is released. My university pays for this service as well, but it might be worthwhile to manage expectations.

Honestly, I'm impressed that as many apps work as expected on the new platform. Yeah, it makes Google look a little bad that it doesn't, but for anyone with a history of OS and computing experience, this is a pretty impressive start overall.

That said, I look forward to a working version of file stream soon.

It's not like this was a surprise that caught the world off-guard. Big Sur has been in beta for a few months and Apple announced the new silicon months ago.
Dropbox is already compatible, and they're a WAY smaller company than Google.
This is just Google being indignant.

Google should stop using the Kernel Extension. In June 2019 Apple introduced System Extensions as a replacement for Kernel Extensions. In June 2020 they told developers that Kernel Extensions will be a real issue with Apple Silicon. On maOS Big Sur Google Drive still uses the Kernel Extension and now with Apple Silicon it's broken. Competitors of Google are capable of delivering zero-day support for their storage solution. Why can't Google do this? As mentioned earlier, Chrome is already optimised for Apple Silicon and we're not even paying for this. Google Drive File Stream on the other hand is a paid solution.

Please release a solution asap as this impacts productivity within companies!

This is the answer Google support gave me. They say it will take until mid-end 2021!!!! Completely unacceptable to such an essential service.

Hope that this email finds you well. My name is Hristo and I'm part of the Google Drive team.

From the notes left by my colleague I understood that you're using MacBook Pro with the newest M1 ARM processor and you're unable to run Drive File Stream. The newest MacBook machines with the newest CPU - Apple-designed Arm processors, in the form of the T1 and T2 chips which, due to their architecture, are not compatible with Drive File Stream as you noticed in the external resources.

Our Development team is working on this already and they will make it possible to use Drive FS app on the listed machine/s. However, this will happen no earlier than mid-end 2021 as per initial prognoses, but those can change. Tracking such updates can happen via:

We will face a decision on whether we move to MS cloud soon. This will likely push us to go.

We are Mac users using Drive. We're deploying M1s fast as the battery life is so good for users who move around.

As a big fan of Google and Google Products, this is extremely disappointing. File Stream is a necessity for our organisation to work effectively and withing data privacy rules.

Please fix this asap.

I agree...Google should at the least provide an expected timeline for supporting this. I have implemented a paid workaround - odrive....but now I am paying twice for the same service......

What a joke, if chrome wasn't able to track your cookies on an M1 anymore it'd be fixed in days!
