High CPU utilization when using Hangouts Meet 1 Recommended Answer 45 Replies 174 Upvotes

When using Hangouts Meet for video conferencing, my PC becomes unbearably slow.  CPU utilization is staying almost constantly at 100%.  This makes it almost impossible to share screen to those in the conference.  I'm using Chrome browser on a newer Dell all-in-one PC with Quad-core AMD chip and 6GB of memory.  Only time I have any problem with CPU utilization is when trying to use Hangouts Meet.  Any suggestions?

This is a very weird issue with hangouts.
I use zoom and skype all the time and never have this issue.
I just finished a hangouts meeting and it depleted 70% of my battery in less than 1 hour.

How is this not being discussed more? When I enable my webcam for meetings, my processor utilization hits 100%, if the meeting is too long, my entire computer freezes. When I disable the webcam, no problem. An i5-6360u with 8 GB of RAM should not be maxed out for simply using the webcam.

It is really annoying, Google Meet is taking all the juice of the computer.

It might be worth disabling all extensions in Chrome, just to test whether one of those are contributing to the issue?

Contacted Google Support and was given two options:
  1. Try to use Canary (google's nightly developer build of chrome)
  2. Try changing my video quality while in a hangout meeting, to use a lower quality setting
Obviously, these are both poor "solutions" to the problem here.  I guess we will have to switch to zoom
