"You don’t have write access to <Drive>. Please pick a different local cached files directory."

I have this infuriating issue where Google Drive For desktop states that it does not have write access. I have tried:
  • Installing / Re-Installing
  • Logging out and back in
  • Changing the location to all my different drives (+an external drive)
  • Running it all As Administrator

I can't find anything online about this, could someone please shed some light on what could be the issue?

Hello. Windows 10 user here.
I do not have enough space on my C: drive to stream the files I want. I have way more space on D: so I changed the Local cached files directory to D:\Google Drive\DriveFS - but the app keeps telling me "You don't have write access to D:\Google Drive\DriveFS". Please pick a different local cached files directory.

I would like to only stream certain files using my D: drive as a cache folder. How can I achieve this when changing the Local cached files directory to to another drive folder doesn't work?

I tried:
  • Uninstalling Drive for Desktop > Delete all cache files in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS > Reboot > Run Drive for Desktop installer as administrator > Launch app as administrator
  • Changing the cache path folder to just D:\
  • Changing the D:\Google Drive sharing permissions to Full Control for the same user (also the administrator)

In my specific case, I tried to point the cache to a folder inside an exFAT-formatted partition. I reformatted the partition to NTFS and it works now.

So in order to get rid of this message in Windows I need an NTFS formatted drive? What a hunk of... Seriously, why would you lock to a specific file system? In macOS, there's no lock I can choose any drive I want with any file system that can be handled by an OS.

For those of you experiencing this issue, I found the problem on my end. I'm on a Windows computer so I just reformated the cache drive and it worked perfectly. Please make sure to backup anything you have there.
