Dynamic content in Gmail messages

Dynamic email messages use markup to display AMP content within Gmail. Other Google products can send messages that include AMP content, and users in your organization might receive dynamic email messages from external senders.

The original source of a dynamic email message has 3 types of similar content:

  • Plaintext, for email clients that display only plaintext.
  • HTML, for email clients that don't display dynamic content.
  • AMP markup. When a Gmail user opens the message, both dynamic and interactive AMP content is displayed. The AMP markup retrieves any updates when the message is opened, and immediately displays them to the user.

Because of the dynamic nature of these messages, the content displayed in Gmail might change as time passes. For example, a comment notification from an active Google Doc could be different each time the user opens the same message over the course of several days.

Dynamic email and Google Doc comments

The email notifications you get about Google Doc comments include dynamic content. Because of the dynamic nature of these messages, the latest Doc comment thread is always shown in the email notification. You can read, resolve, and respond to Doc comments directly from the email.

To let your users respond to or resolve Doc comments directly from Gmail, turn on dynamic email.

Using dynamic email with a firewall

If your organization uses a firewall, make sure to set it up so people in your organization can use Gmail. Firewall rules should connect to the supported hosts and routes in Gmail firewall settings. When you use dynamic email and a firewall to connect to hosts not listed in the article, there might be an impact to Gmail performance.
