As an administrator, you might want to see how things are progressing as data moves from one region to another. For example, you may want to know how long it takes to move your data, what percentage of your accounts have been moved, and how that percentage is calculated.
How long does a move take?
How is the completion percentage calculated?
Move progress is calculated based on a combination of service, user, and region.
For a service within a selected region, a user account is moved to the new region when all of that user’s covered data is stored at rest in the new region.
For example, if there are 10 Gmail users being moved to the European region and six of those users’ accounts have completed the move, the Gmail move completion percentage is 60%.
Within a specific region, a user’s covered data is moved to the new region when all of that user’s covered data is stored in the new region.
Why does the move take longer for some services?
For example, the amount of user data for Google Calendar is usually significantly less than the Drive data for the same user. So, the covered Calendar data will probably finish moving before the covered Drive data.

Why did the completion percentage go down?
- An admin changed the data regions policy for an organizational unit.
- An admin reassigned the user to another organizational unit.
- A user or admin changed the ownership of the data object. It is now owned by a different user.
- For shared objects, a user or admin changes the members with whom the object is shared.
For example, if a user moves from an organizational unit based in Europe to one based in the United States, a data regions policy has changed. This change triggers a data move for the user’s covered data from Europe to the United States, which lowers the completion precentage.
How do I interpret move progress for backups?
G Suite maintains backups of primary data for disaster recovery and business continuity. In rare cases, G Suite uses backups to restore data and maintain high reliability. (These backups aren’t available to restore data upon customer request.)
Backups expire (are overwritten) on defined timelines.
When you select a data region, G Suite starts creating backups in that region after your primary data move is complete. Existing backups aren’t moved to your selected region—they are left to expire.
