Migration FAQs

Below are common questions about the migration from classic Hangouts to Hangouts Meet.

When will Meet support browsers other than Chrome?

Meet is compatible with Firefox (version 60 or higher). Similar to Chrome, these users can join Meetings directly from their browser without plugins. A solution for users on other browsers such as Internet Explorer® and Safari®, will arrive at least four weeks in advance of automatically turned on for all remaining users.

Why am I seeing a notification to update my Calendar event to Meet?

During the migration from classic Hangouts to Meet, video meetings scheduled in Calendar will be gradually updated to use Meet. For most events this change will happen automatically. However, you may need to manually select Meet for some Calendar events.

This may be necessary for complex event setups. For example, if multiple events on different Calendars use the same video link.

It is important to update these Calendar events before classic Hangouts video calls are deactivated.

How do I update my existing events to Hangouts Meet?

If your meeting is not automatically changed to Meet, you can update an existing Calendar event to use Meet instead of classic Hangouts. On the Event Details tab, next to Video call Video call, click the Down arrow Down Arrow and select Hangouts Meet. Then save the event.

Does this change take effect on Chrome devices for Meetings (CfM) devices too?

Yes, Meet is also enabled for these devices, which will see the Meet homepage.

Users can still join and start classic Hangouts video calls from CfM after enabling Meet. See Join a video call for details.I am a .gov (or similar) domain using Google Talk (GTalk). What should I expect?

Domains using Google Talk do not migrate to Meet. If your .gov (or similar) domain currently uses GTalk, you can continue to use GTalk.

How do I turn off classic Hangouts video calling and only use Meet in my organization?

As a G Suite administrator, you can use Meet for all video meetings and deactivate classic Hangouts video calls. This is a global setting that impacts your entire organization.

When selected, any remaining classic Hangouts links are removed from all Calendar events. Only select this option if your organization is primarily on Meet and there is no classic Hangout video calling scheduled in Calendar.

Note: This change is reversible. If you uncheck All meetings use Meet, all previously removed classic Hangout links will be available again in Calendar..

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenG Suiteand thenGoogle Hangouts.
  3. Click Global settings.
  4. Next to Hangouts Meet, check All meetings use Meet.

How do I know if my organization has Calendar events with classic Hangouts video links?

You can check whether your organization is still using classic Hangouts video calling in the Meet audit log.

You will want to look for the number of calls that contain a Calendar Event ID with classic Hangouts as the product type.

If you take no action, we will automatically transition your organization to be Meet-only when there are no more classic Hangout video calls occurring for your organization.

How do I quickly start an impromptu Meet video call (not scheduled in Calendar)?

If your organization has turned off classic Hangouts video calling, you can quickly start an impromptu Meet video call with an alias. To do so, agree on a name or alias with your meeting participants and type it into the “enter meeting code” field in Meet.

How can I revert our organization back to classic Hangouts?

You can turn off Meet for all or any of your OU’s. This means that new Calendar events will include a classic Hangouts video meeting link. Existing events will remain unchanged.
