What's new in Gmail

Welcome to the new face of Gmail! We’ve updated the user interface and many of the email features you already use, and added new tools and apps to help you work faster and more efficiently. To move your users to the new Gmail at a pace that works best for your organization, you can select from one of three options.

New email features   

Organize emails from your inbox 

Hover over unopened messages in your inbox and click an icon to archive, delete, mark as unread (or read), or snooze messages.

Snooze emails until later

Postpone emails to a future date or time that's more convenient. Learn how to snooze emails.

Use suggested replies and follow-ups

Quickly reply to emails using phrases that appear based on the message you've received. Learn how to use Smart Reply.

You might see old emails at the top of your inbox with a suggestion to reply or follow up. Learn how to show or hide these reminders to follow up.

Work offline in Gmail

Write, search, delete, and label the last 30 days of messages (and attachments) using Gmail offline. Messages you write while offline are automatically sent when an internet connection becomes available. Learn more about Gmail offline.

New inbox features

Expand or shrink your inbox view 

Change how spacious or compact you want your inbox view. In the top right, click Settings Settingsand then Display density.

Tip: If you choose Default, you'll see a preview of attachments from your inbox.

Show or hide your menu

To make room for previewing your email, you can expand or shrink your inbox view by clicking Menu Menu.

Edit labels & categories

You can now edit labels and categories directly from the Menu Menu. Scroll to the label or category you want to change, then click Settings Settings.

View Calendar, Tasks, Keep & Add-ons

You can now use Google Calendar, Keep, Tasks, and Add-ons while in Gmail.

At the right of your inbox, click the icons in the vertical list for easy access to productivity tools. 

  • Calendar Calendar: View your daily schedule, click events to edit them, create new events, and jump to upcoming events.
  • Keep Google Keep: Create checklists and take notes.
  • Tasks Tasks logo: Add to-do's and deadlines.
  • Add-ons Add: Get extra Gmail tools to help manage your mail.

Options for moving users to the new Gmail

G Suite admins can select one of three options to move users to the new Gmail UI and features.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenG Suiteand thenGmail.
  3. In User settings, scroll to New Gmail.
  4. Select one of the following options:
    •  Allow users access to the new Gmail and features after August 21, 2018
    •  Allow users access to the new Gmail UI and features
    •  Default users to the new Gmail UI and features (When this option is selected, users don't need to opt
        in to the new Gmail; they'll see it the next time they sign in to their account.)
  5. Click Save.

It can take up to an hour for changes to propagate to all users.

Have users opt in to the new Gmail 

After you select an option to enable the new Gmail UI and features, users can opt in from their Gmail settings.     

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Settings Settingsand then Try the new Gmail.

If you change your mind, just click Settings Settingsand then Go back to classic Gmail.
