1. When will I switch to Meet?

The move from classic Hangouts to Meet is happening in the following phases. Ignore this information if you are already using Hangouts Meet. See whether Meet is turned on for your organization.

Phase 1 (Complete): Automatic activation (with opt-out)

Meet is the video calling experience for G Suite domains upgrading to Meet on Google’s recommended schedule.

This phase is complete, which means:

  • New Calendar events include a link to a Meet video meeting.
  • Existing events remain unchanged.
  • Google meeting room hardware uses Meet.
  • Users can still join classic Hangouts video calls, even if Meet is enabled.

Turn off classic Hangouts video calling

Admins can turn off classic Hangouts video calling in the admin panel under the global Hangouts Meet setting “All meetings use Meet”.

This means:

  • Classic Hangouts video URLs for your domain no longer work. Users see an error message to contact the meeting organizer instead.

  • Any remaining classic Hangouts URLs scheduled in Calendar are removed. This doesn't impact Calendar events scheduled by someone outside of your domain.

  • Users can still join any classic Hangouts video calls scheduled by someone outside of your domain.

  • Users can quickly start and join Meet video calls by using an alias. For more information, see How do I quickly start an impromptu Meet video call (not scheduled in Calendar)?.

  • All of these changes are reversible by unchecking All Meetings use Meet in the Admin console.

You should only do this if your organization is primarily on Meet with no classic Hangout video calls scheduled in the Calendar. If you are not sure, check the usage statistics for your domain. See How do I know if my organization has Calendar events with classic Hangouts video links?

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  3. Click Global settings.

  4. Next to Hangouts Meet, check All Meetings use Meet.

  5. Click Save.

For G Suite domains upgrading on Google’s recommended schedule, this step happens automatically when there is no classic Hangout video call usage from Calendar for your domain. No action is necessary

Phase 2: Meet on for all users (no opt-out)

In 2019, Meet will have parity with the existing classic Hangouts experience including support for Windows and Mac users who do not use Chrome or Firefox. After this, Meet will automatically be turned on for all organizational units and domains and you can no longer opt out. This phase will be communicated through the G Suite updates blog and will provide at least four weeks advance notice before Meet is turned on for all users.

In this phase, all new Calendar events include a Meet video meeting link. All Chrome devices for meetings will also use Meet.

Phase 3: Classic Hangouts video calling deactivation

At least four weeks following the completion of Phase 2, Meet will be activated for all users (no opt-out). This means:

  • Classic Hangouts will be turned off for all domains. Links to Hangouts classic video calls will no longer be valid.
  • All new and existing events will use Meet.
  • All unscheduled meetings will use Meet instead of classic Hangouts.
    • To start or join an impromptu meeting with other people in your organization, all participants must enter the same meeting name in the “Use a meeting code” field.
  • You can still join classic Hangout video calls created by users outside of your organization.
  • These changes apply only to video meetings scheduled in Calendar. Direct calling from chat will not be impacted.

To deactivate classic Hangouts video calling early see How do I turn off classic Hangouts video calling and only use Meet in my organization?. When classic Hangouts is deactivated,  your organization will use Meet for all video meetings.
