Let users change their photo and profile information
This page is for admins. To learn how to change your profile information, go here instead.
As a Directory administrator, you control what profile information users can change. If allowed, users can change their name, photo, gender, birthday, or work location.
Update profile editing
Before you begin: To apply the setting for certain users: Put their accounts in an organizational unit (to set by department) or put them in a configuration group (to set for users across or within departments).
From the Admin console Home page, go to Menu Directory Directory settings.
- Click Profile editing.
- To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit or a configuration group.
- Check the boxes for the profile information you want to let users change. Learn more about what happens when you check or uncheck a box in the following sections.
- Click Save. If you configured an organizational unit or group, you might be able to Inherit/Override an organization or Unset a group.
Check Name to allow users to edit their profile name and nickname. The profile name and nickname are used throughout G Suite apps, including Gmail, Contacts, shared docs, and calendar invites. When a user edits their name, it overrides the admin-set name. Only the User details page in the Google Admin console shows the admin-set name.
If you uncheck Name, user-modified names and nicknames are deleted, and names are reverted to the administrator-set names.
Check Photo to allow users to edit their high-resolution profile photo and their cover photo. They can edit their photo in About me, their Google Account, YouTube, and Google+. If you add profile photos for your users, the user-set photos override the admin-set photos.
If you uncheck Photo, you get an alert that this action archives any profile and cover photos set by users. The photos are preserved in the user's Google Album Archive.
This setting has no effect on the low-resolution photo set in Gmail, which users can always change.
Check Birthday to allow users to edit their birthday in their Google Account. G Suite Education accounts don't have this control; Education account users are never allowed to update their birthday.
Note: If a user enters a birthday indicating they're too young, their account may be disabled.
Check Work location to allow users to change their work location. Users can edit their desk location in Calendar settings. For more information, see Set up room booking suggestions.
