If you have Drive Enterprise edition, upgrade to G Suite Enterprise to get this service.

New G Suite subscriptions come with Hangouts Meet already turned on. However, if your organization uses classic Hangouts, you can switch to Meet by setting it as the default option for upcoming video meetings. 

When you do this, new Google Calendar events include a link to a Meet video meeting. One-time Calendar events with links to classic Hangouts video calls won’t change. 

Note: Even if your organization does not turn on Meet, users can still join Meet video meetings created by users in other organizations.

Turn on Meet

Turn on Meet for users

You can turn off video calling in classic Hangouts and use Hangouts Meet for all video meetings. If you do, classic Hangouts links are removed from all Calendar events, but users can still join external classic Hangouts video calls. Recurring events that are already scheduled in Calendar will gradually be migrated to Meet.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenG Suiteand thenGoogle Hangouts.
  3. Click Meet settings and then Hangouts Meet.
  4. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit or a configuration group.
  5. Check the All Chrome devices for meetings will display Hangouts Meet box.
  6. Click Save. If you configured an organizational unit or group, you might be able to Inherit/Override an organization or Unset a group.

You can also turn off classic Hangouts video calls immediately for all of your users.

Turn on Meet for Google meeting room hardware

Once you turn on Meet, you can't switch back to classic Hangouts for Google meeting room hardware. If you add new Google meeting room hardware for your organization, the devices use Meet for video meetings.

Before you begin: To apply the setting for certain users: Put their accounts in an organizational unit (to set by department) or put them in a configuration group (to set for users across or within departments).

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenG Suiteand thenGoogle Hangouts.
  3. Click Meet settings and then Hangouts Meet.
  4. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit or a configuration group.
  5. Check the All Chrome devices for meetings will display Hangouts Meet box.
  6. Click Save. If you configured an organizational unit or group, you might be able to Inherit/Override an organization or Unset a group.
Manage video meeting settings

As a G Suite administrator, you can manage the features available for Meet video meetings.

Before you begin: To apply the setting for certain users: Put their accounts in an organizational unit (to set by department) or put them in a configuration group (to set for users across or within departments).

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenG Suiteand thenGoogle Hangouts.
  3. Click Meet settings.
  4. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit or a configuration group.
  5. Choose a setting:
    • Telephony—Events and invitations include a phone number for guests to join meetings by phone.
    • Client logs upload—Users’ web browser and mobile app log information is sent to Google. This includes users’ email addresses and other information. Google uses it to help troubleshoot support requests from your organization. 
    • Recording—Let people record their meetings. Recordings save to the meeting owner’s Google Drive. For details, see Turn recording on or off for Meet.
    • Stream—Let people stream their meetings live to a large audience. For details, see Turn live streaming on or off for Meet.
    • Default video quality—You can set the default bandwidth for video calls.
    • Interoperability—Allow users of third-party videoconferencing systems to join your organization’s Hangouts Meet video meetings. For details, see Set up interoperability.
  6. Click Save. If you configured an organizational unit or group, you might be able to Inherit/Override an organization or Unset a group.

G Suite organizations subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) should turn on Meet and use it instead of classic Hangouts video, which is not compatible with HIPAA.
