Convert your classic Sites to new Sites

Important: If you use a Google Account through school or work, learn more about changes in the transition timeline article

Site creation will no longer be available in classic Sites and will only be available in new Sites as of November 1, 2020. Start to convert your classic Sites to new Sites.

Timeline for Sites migration

  • Before November 1, 2020: If you own inactive classic Sites, you must move or copy your classic Site to a new Site to keep it active. Your inactive sites automatically:
    • Download as an archive 
    • Save to your Google Drive
  • On November 1, 2020: Site creation will not be available in classic Sites. You can create a new website in new Sites.
  • On September 1, 2021: If you own active classic Sites, these sites will automatically:
    • Download as an archive
    • Save to your Google Drive
    • Convert to a draft in new Sites for you to review and publish
Find out if your Site is active or inactive 

Inactive Sites are websites that haven't been edited or viewed since before January 2018. 

Active Sites are websites that have been edited or viewed since January 2018. 

Tip: You can find out if your site is active, as well as delete or restore a site

Find out if you can convert your classic Site

You can convert most classic Sites to new Sites. If you can’t convert your Site, you can create a new Site.

  1. On a computer, open a classic Site. If you don’t own the Site, contact the Site owner.
  2. In the top right, click Settings Settings Grey.
  3. Click Manage site.
  4. In the left menu, click Convert to new Sites. If this text does not appear, you can copy your content to new Sites.
Convert your Site
When you convert a site, the new Sites content policies apply.
Convert your site in classic Sites Manager
  1. On your computer, go to classic Sites.
  2. On the left panel, click Classic Sites Manager
  3. On the right panel, click Conversion tool.
  4. To keep the same site permissions, check the box next to "Share with the same people."
  5. Click Start.
    • It may take several minutes to convert large Sites.
    • After conversion, changes you make to your original Site won't transfer to the new one.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. To review your Site, click Review draft.
    • Optional: If you plan to publish your new Site to another address, click Advanced and then Disconnect
  8. To publish your Site, at the top right, click Publish.
  9. Enter a web address for your new Site.
    • Optional: To change who can view your Site, click Manage.
  10. Click Publish.
Convert your Site in classic Sites settings
  1. On your computer, go to classic Google Sites.
  2. In the top right corner, click Settings Settings Grey
  3. Click Manage site.
  4. In the left menu, click Convert to new Sites.
  5. To keep the same site permissions, check the box next to "Share with the same people."
  6. Click Start.
    • It may take several minutes to convert large sites.
    • After conversion, changes you make to your original site won't transfer to the new one.
  7. Click Continue.

  9. To publish your site, at the top right, click Publish.

  11. Click Publish.
Copy your classic Site to new Sites 
  1. On your computer, open new Google Sites.
  2. At the top, under "Start a new site," select a template.
  3. On the right, click Pages.
  4. Click Add Add publish.
  5. Copy and paste content from your classic site to your new site.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 as necessary.
  7. To publish your site, at the top right, click Publish.
  8. Enter a web address for your new site.
    • Optional: To change who can view your site, click Manage.
  9. Click Publish.

Tip: Add a link on your classic Site to send people to your new Site.
