Google Domains: Verify your domain

Why we verify

We verify that you own your domain — that’s your business web address, like yourcompany.com — to ensure that no one else is using your domain for your Google service without your permission (to send email, for example).

How verification works

The Google Setup Wizard gives you a unique verification code that you add to the domain settings at your host, Google Domains, a separate service for registering and managing domain names. Your domain host manages technical settings for your domain and may also provide email or web hosting. (Google Domains not your domain host? See instructions for other hosts.)

These instructions walk you through adding a TXT record that contains the verification code to your Google Domains settings.

Let's get started.

Google has two versions of the Setup Wizard. Both wizards verify your domain, but the steps are a little different. Choose the instructions below for your version of the Setup Wizard.

Setup Wizard Version 1 Setup Wizard Version 2

If you don’t see either of these screens, see the step below to open the Setup Wizard.

Open the Google Setup Wizard
  1. Go to admin.google.com to sign in to the Google Admin console. Enter the email address and password for your Google service. (This email address ends with @yourcompany.com, and is not an @gmail.com or a personal Google Account.)
  2. Once you sign in, you’ll see the Setup Wizard at the top of the Admin console. Click Verify Domain.

  3. Leave the Setup Wizard open in this browser window. You’ll continue to refer to it during the verification process. In a moment, you’ll open a different browser window to sign in to your domain host’s website.

Instructions for Setup Wizard Version 1

1. Choose verification method

These instructions cover the steps in Version 1 of the Google Setup Wizard to verify your domain. After verifying, you can set up Gmail and start using Docs, Calendar, and more apps.

When you open the Setup Wizard, you’ll see the Verify by adding a meta tag option. (This option is best if you’re a webmaster or can edit HTML on your company’s website.)

Click the Choose another verification method drop-down list and select Add a domain host record (TXT or CNAME).

Log in to your domain host

  1. Leave the Google Setup Wizard open.
  2. Open a new browser window and go to the Google Domains site at domains.google.com.

Whenever you see the Google  icon in these instructions, you’ll complete that step in the Google Setup Wizard.
  3. In the Google Domains site, click Manage my domains at the upper right. This will take you to the Google Domains console.
  4. Click the round user icon on the top right to make sure you’re signed into the account you used to purchase your domain. Keep in mind that you purchased your domain using a different account from your Google Cloud account.

    switch accounts
If you don’t know your account information, you can recover your login credentials.
  5.  In the Google Setup Wizard, check the I signed in to my domain host box.

Click below for the next step.
3. Go to the Google Domains settings

It may be possible for your domain host's support team to add the verification record for you. See an example request.

  1. In the Google Domains site, click DNS icon next to the domain name you want to verify for your Google service. In this example, we’ll use the domain yourcompany.com, but you’ll see your own domain name instead.

  5. In the Google Domains site, paste the entire verification code into the Data field.

    add TXT
  6. Click Add to save your new TXT record.

  7.  In the Google Setup Wizard, check the I added the TXT verification record box.

Click below for the next step.
5. Save the TXT record and verify
In the Google Setup Wizard step Save the TXT record and verify, check the I saved the TXT verification record box.

You have now completed the domain verification process. Google can typically detect your new record and verify ownership of your domain in 60 minutes or less. You may also be able to check the verification status in the Setup Wizard:
