Closing inactive Google Workspace accounts

To make it easier for domain owners to sign up for Google Workspace, Google deletes Google Workspace accounts that are inactive. If your account is inactive, you'll be notified by email that your account will be deleted unless you take steps to reactivate it.

Why does Google close inactive accounts?

Some customers can’t sign up for Google Workspace accounts because the domain that they own is already associated with an existing Google Workspace account that is inactive. To make signing up for new Google Workspace accounts easier, inactive accounts are closed.

You'll be notified if your account is inactive. If you don't take steps to reactivate your account, your account is permanently deleted 30–60 days after your first notification. You can find the amount of time you have to reactivate your account in your email notification.

What do I need to do if I get a notification?

What you need to do depends on whether you want to keep your account, only keep your data, or delete your account.

I want to keep my account

To keep your account and data, sign in to your Google Admin console before the deadline. Use the administrator email address (including username and domain) provided in your notification.

Once you sign in, you'll receive an email within the next 48 hours letting you know that your account is no longer targeted for deletion.

Tip: Forgot your username or password? See Can't sign in to the Admin console.

Google Workspace Resellers: If you receive a notification that your resold customer account will be deleted, contact their administrator and ask them to sign in to prevent deletion.

I only want to keep my data

If you don't want to keep your account, but want to retain the data in your account:

  1. Use the administrator email address in your notification to sign in to the Google Admin console. Include the username and domain.
  2. Use the Data Export tool to export your organization's data.
  3. When the export is complete, follow the instructions to Cancel your Google Workspace subscription.
I want to delete my account

If you don't want to keep your account or data, you don’t have to do anything. We’ll automatically delete your account within 60 days after you receive your first notification.

When the account is deleted, data in your organization's account, such as your Gmail messages and contacts, is permanently deleted.

What happens if my account is deleted?

  • You can no longer access any Google Workspace services.
  • You’ll no longer be charged for your Google Workspace subscription.
  • You and your users’ account data, such as Gmail messages and contacts and Google Drive items, are permanently deleted.
  • No one will be able to access your old data by creating a new Google Workspace account with the same domain name.
  • You can sign up for a new account using the same domain name as the deleted one.
