Google Sync for BlackBerry End of Life

Update: This article is about the Google Sync for BlackBerry app, which Google stopped supporting in 2012. A different product also called Google Sync for BlackBerry, which uses ActiveSync to sync with Google Apps, still works for Google Apps customers with BlackBerry 10 devices. See Set Up Google Sync for BlackBerry 10 for more details.

Beginning June 1, 2012, we're ending our support for Google Sync for BlackBerry. Google Sync for BlackBerry is an app that syncs users' Google Calendar and Contacts with their native BlackBerry calendar and contacts apps. The app download link will be removed on June 1. Users may continue to use the app, if installed, however it will not be supported by Google, and it will stop working on September 1, 2012.

You should switch to BlackBerry® Internet Service (BIS), which is part of the standard BlackBerry service plan to sync Gmail, Google Calendar, and Contacts with their BlackBerry. BIS is provided by RIM and mobile carriers. BlackBerry offers this guidance on syncing Calendar and Contacts in addition to your Gmail. Please contact RIM or your carrier for more information and support.

If you’re an enterprise customer using Google Apps for Business, Education, or Government, with BlackBerry® Enterprise Servers (BES), you can use Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server to sync mail, calendar, and contacts with their users' devices. Small businesses using Google Apps for Business can also secure a hosted Google Apps for Blackberry solution through a Google Partner.

What do I need to do?

As noted above, the app will continue to work if you already have it downloaded, but it will no longer be supported by Google. You can leave the app installed on your phone and it will continue to work until September 1, 2012, however, because it's unsupported, we recommend you switch to one of the alternatives by following these steps:

  1. Delete the Google Sync for Blackberry application from your device Google Sync for BlackBerry icon. Users who keep this app on the phone when they set up BIS or BES risk creating duplicate events and contacts.
  2. Set up BIS or Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, depending on what you or your organization is using to sync mail, calendar, and contacts.

How do I know if my device is affected?

This affects BlackBerry devices with the Google Sync for BlackBerry app.
Look on your BlackBerry to see if you find this app:
This change doesn't affect iPhones or Windows Phones using Google Sync. Please note that Google Sync for BlackBerry is a different product from Google Sync, which uses Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync®.

FAQ

Why are you ending support for this service now?
As part of a Google-wide initiative of "spring cleaning" we're ending this legacy service used only by a small percentage of users to focus on new feature development. Gmail and Google Calendar users can use BIS to sync their Gmail, Google Calendar, and Contacts with their BlackBerry. Google Apps customers using a BlackBerry Enterprise Server can use Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server to sync mail, calendar, and contacts with their users' devices.
What will happen if I keep using Google Sync for BlackBerry after June 1, 2012?
The service will be unsupported and we're removing the download link to Google Sync for BlackBerry. The service will continue to work for users who've already installed the app, but it will be shut off on September 1, 2012. After June 1, the service will be unsupported, and we recommend you move to an alternative solution as soon as possible.
What will happen to Google Sync for BlackBerry after September 1, 2012?
The service will be turned off and no longer work for those who’ve downloaded the Google Sync for BlackBerry app. We recommend you move to an alternative solution as soon as possible.
Who does this affect?
We're ending support for Google Sync for BlackBerry for all Google users with a BlackBerry device (including Google Accounts and Google Apps accounts) starting June 1, 2012.
