Modify the organizational structure

You can change your organizational tree structure by adding, renaming, moving, or deleting an organizational unit.

Change organizational tree structure

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Menu ""and thenDirectoryand thenOrganizational units.
  3. Hover over the organizational unit you want to modify, then follow the steps below.

Add an organizational unit

  1. Click Add ""
  2. Enter a name under Name of organizational unit.
  3. (Optional) To add a description of the organizational unit, enter it under Description.
  4. (Optional) To place the organizational unit under a different parent organizational unit:
    1. Under Parent organizational unit, click Edit ""
    2. Choose a parent organizational unit.
    3. Click Done.
  5. Click Create.

You can also add an organizational unit by clicking Add "" in the top left of the Organizational units page.

Rename an organizational unit
  1. More Settings and then Edit.
  2. (Optional) To rename an organizational unit, enter a new name under Name of organizational unit.

    Note: The forward slash character "/" isn't allowed in names of organizational units. In the Admin console, you'll get an error message. If you use GCDS, Google Workspace Admin SDK, or School Directory Sync to create or rename an organizational unit, the "/" is replaced by an underscore "_".

  3. (Optional) To add a description of the organizational unit, enter it under Description.
  4. Click Update.

Move an organizational unit

  1. Click Move Move
  2. Select a new parent organizational unit.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Review the information about moving the organizational unit.
  5. Click Move.

Delete an organizational unit

You can't delete an organizational unit if it has users, devices, or child organizational units. Before deleting an organizational unit, move any users and devices to other organizational units, and delete any child organizational units.

Click More Settings and then Delete.
