You can set up Google Workspace Migration for Microsoft Outlook (GWMMO) for users in your organization so they can import email, calendar, or contact data from a Microsoft Exchange account or PST file.GWMMO used to be known as G Suite Migration for Microsoft Outlook (GSMMO).
Overview and system requirementsOverview
GWMMO lets individual users migrate their own email, calendar, or contact data from Microsoft Exchange or from local PST files to a Google Workspace account. Administrators can also use the command-line version of the product to migrate data on behalf of a single user. Learn more
Note: Only personal contacts are migrated for each user. In order for your Global Address List, including shared contacts, to be available to users, an administrator must migrate the data first with a utility like Google Cloud Directory Sync (GCDS).
Note: As Microsoft no longer actively supports these platforms, support for Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 in our data migration and sync products stopped on December 31, 2018. Learn more
Each client machine that runs the migration utility needs to have the following minimum configuration.
Operating system requirements
- Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit)
- Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit)
- Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit)
- Windows 10 (32 and 64 bit)
Regardless of which version of Windows you're using, we recommend you update to the latest patches for that version.
Note: GWMMO isn't supported for Apple Mac. To synchronize a Google Account with Outlook for Mac, consult your Microsoft documentation.
- Microsoft Outlook 2003 SP3
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 SP2 (or SP1 with hotfix)
- Microsoft Outlook 2010 (32 and 64 bit)
- Microsoft Outlook 2013 (32 and 64 bit)
- Microsoft Outlook 2016 (32 and 64 bit)
- Microsoft Outlook 2019 (32 and 64 bit)
Note: Microsoft no longer actively supports Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007. We recommend you upgrade to a supported version of Microsoft Outlook.
Set up and install GWMMOStep 1: Provision your users in Google Workspace
Before your users can migrate data, you have to provision accounts for them in Google Workspace. Learn more
Each user, including administrators, must also sign in to their Google Workspace account at least once, to accept Google's Terms and Conditions.
In addition to provisioning user accounts, you can also:
- Create nicknames for your users that match aliases they had on your Exchange server
- Create groups that match the mailing lists on your Exchange server
- Add domain aliases
Before your users migrate their data, you can migrate your shared contacts to Google Workspace so your users have immediate access to your full address list.
For information about migrating contacts, go to Google Cloud Directory Sync.
After you’ve completed the steps above, your next step is to install GWMMO on each client machine.
There are 2 options for installation.
Option 1: Push an MSI file to your users
To do this, download the MSI file from the GWMMO download page. Be sure to pick the correct edition (32 bit or 64 bit) for your users' version of Outlook.
You can then push the MSI file to your users with the software you use to deploy and safeguard your organization's applications.
Your users can then follow these instructions to install the file.
Option 2: Let your users download and install GWMMO themselves
Your users can download the EXE file from the GWMMO download page.
They can then follow these instructions to install the file.
The default location on each client machine is C:\Program Files\Google\Google Apps Migration.

Run only one instance of the utility on each client machine, and run only one instance of the utility for each user.
For detailed information about using GWMMO to run migrations, go to GWMMO user help.
You or your users decide whether smart features in Gmail, Chat, Meet, and personalization features in other Google products can use data from Gmail, Chat, and Meet. You can configure these settings for users, and users can always choose their own settings. Learn how to Turn on or off Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart features and personalization.
Note: To use smart features and personalization after a data migration, they must be on before the migration. Otherwise, several core Gmail features, such as autosorting, do not work.
