Google Apps is now G Suite. Same service, new name. More about the name change.

What is GSSMO?

GSSMO used to be know as Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook (GASMO).

G Suite Sync for Microsoft Outlook® (GSSMO) is a plugin for Outlook that lets you use Outlook to manage your G Suite mail, calendar, and contacts—along with your Outlook notes, tasks, and journal entries. GSSMO seamlessly syncs mail, calendar events, contacts, notes, and tasks between your Google profile in Outlook and your G Suite account in the cloud. As a result, you can access this same information at any time, from any device where you use G Suite.

Note: When you install GSSMO, you also have the option to migrate your mail, calendar, contacts, and other data from your old Outlook profile. However, if all you want to do is migrate data (that is, you don't plan to keep working in Outlook afterwards), use G Suite Migration for Microsoft Outlook instead.

FAQ

When should I use GSSMO?

If you've recently switched to G Suite from Microsoft Exchange or some other Outlook service, GSSMO can help out while you make the transition.

What data is synchronized between Outlook and my G Suite account in the cloud?

All of your G Suite mail, calendar events, and contacts, as well as your Outlook notes and tasks are synced. For details, see What's synchronized between Outlook and G Suite?

What Outlook data is not synchronized?

Data that isn't supported by G Suite or is otherwise incompatible. This includes Outlook journal entries, follow-up flags, distribution lists, rich formatting in contacts, and more. You can continue to use these features in Outlook, and in some cases you can use equivalent features in G Suite. But the data isn't synchronized back and forth. For a complete list of features that aren't synchronized, see What's synchronized between Outlook and G Suite?

Which Outlook features are not supported by GSSMO?

For a comprehensive list of unsupported Outlook features, see What's synchronized between Outlook and G Suite?

Can GSSMO help me import Microsoft Exchange data to G Suite?

Yes, you can save your Exchange data as a PST file and choose the import data when you install GSSMO option. You can also choose the import it later option.

Note, however, that if all you want to do is import data to G Suite—that is, you don't plan to keep working in Outlook afterwards—use G Suite Migration for Microsoft Outlook instead of installing GSSMO.

Can I import my Outlook data from a hosted service other than Microsoft Exchange?

Sure! Just export the data from Outlook as a PST file and import it using either the import data when you install GSSMO option or G Suite Migration for Microsoft Outlook.

What gets imported to Outlook?

Email messages, folders, calendar events, contacts, tasks, notes, journal entries, and more. A few things that don't get imported to Outlook include public folders, category assignments for mail messages, mail signatures, and rules. Note that while journal entries import to Outlook, they don't import to your G Suite account in the cloud. For details, see What's synchronized between Outlook and G Suite?

Can GSSMO import continuously from Exchange, syncing Exchange mail with G Suite on an ongoing basis?

No. When importing from an Exchange profile, GSSMO takes a snapshot of the profile's current data only and imports just that. Once the import is complete, no new email, calendar events, or other data received on the Exchange server will import or synchronize with your G Suite account in the cloud. To sync email continuously between an Exchange server and G Suite, your administrator must set up dual delivery.

Will my existing Outlook plugins work?

Most plugins should continue to function as usual. Some plugins, however, are disabled during the installation process due to incompatibility with GSSMO. These plug-ins include:

  • Acrobat PDF Maker Toolbar
    (registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\PDFMOutlook.PDFMOutlook)
  • Outlook Change Notifier
    (registry key: HKLM \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\AddinsOutlookChangeNotifier.Connect)

We also recommend disabling any anti-virus plug-ins, as they can often lead to inconsistent syncing behavior.

Can I use GSSMO with my Mac version of Outlook?

No, GSSMO isn't supported for Mac. Microsoft Outlook for Mac doesn't support the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI), which is required for GSSMO to communicate with Outlook. This Outlook limitation makes a Mac-compatible version of GSSMO infeasible.

Does the G Suite SLA apply to this product? What about your response time to Windows patches or Office hotfixes?

Our SLA applies specifically to our services. Client software is a fundamentally different support problem because of the widely divergent desktop environments it runs on. However, we will respond to support requests in the same manner that we do with our hosted services.

Why don't sent messages show up in my Outlook Sent Items folder?

With the default Outlook settings, they should. If the original settings have been modified, restore the following defaults:

  1. In Outlook, click Tools > Options.
  2. On the Preferences tab, under email, click E-mail Options.
  3. Select the check box for Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder.
What known issues are there about using GSSMO?

For a list of known issues about the current release of GSSMO, go to Known Issues and look under Sync & Mobile.
