Understand chat migration reports

If you migrate users' chat messages with chat migration for the new data migration service, you can access 2 migration reports. The 2 types of reports are a summary report and a migration report.

On this page

Export the reports

After you run a chat migration, you can download the 2 reports in the Google Admin console of your target account.

You must be signed in as a super administrator for this task.

  1. Sign in with a super administrator account to the Google Admin console.

If you aren’t using a super administrator account, you can’t complete these steps.

  2. To export the reports to Google Sheets, click Export migration report or Export summary report.

If the amount of data in the report exceeds the limit allowed in Sheets, the report is downloaded as a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

  3. If the Tasks list doesn't open automatically with the downloaded report, click Tasks .
  4. For Your Tasks, click the link to open the file in Sheets.

Understand the summary report

The summary report provides a count of the number of messages that migrated or failed to migrate for each channel.

Summary report field Description
Team ID The ID of the team.
Channel ID The ID of the channel.
Space ID The ID of the new Google Chat space. If a Chat space wasn't created, the report value is missing.
Migration status Status of the chat migration:
  • Completed—All messages migrated successfully.
  • Running—Migration is still in progress.
  • Failed—The new space wasn't created.
Messages migrated Number of messages and replies that migrated successfully.
Messages failed Number of messages and replies that failed to migrate. To troubleshoot, check the migration report.
Messages skipped Number of messages and replies that were skipped and not migrated.
Discovery issues The number of failures encountered by the system when crawling the source channel.

Interpret the migration report

Use the migration report to identify messages that didn't migrate and the reasons for the failure.

Error report field Description
Status The migration status of the item (skipped, warning, error, success).
Error/warning code & description The code and message associated with the error or warning status.

For help with frequently seen error messages, go to Troubleshoot common error messages (later on this page).

Processing start time Start time of the migration of the item.
Processing end time End time of the migration of the item.
Source type The source item (such as, team, channel, channel metadata, channel memberships, or message).
Source identifier ID of the source item.
Source URI URI of the source item.
Target type The target item (such as, space, space metadata, space memberships, or message).
Target identifier ID of the item being migrated to the target account.
Target URI URI of the target item.

Resolve common error messages

If you get an error that's not mentioned in this table, try running a delta migration.
