Use the new data migration service to migrate your users' email data from one Google Workspace account to another. You set up the migration in the Google Admin console, and the migration process takes place in the cloud.

The new data migration service is a more recent version of the data migration service and can be used for migrations of up to 100 users. Currently, you can migrate only email from a Google Workspace account with the new data migration service. Additional features are coming soon.

If you want to migrate other forms of data from different types of source accounts, go to Get started with the data migration service.

What's migrated from Google Workspace?

The new data migration service migrates:

  • Email messages, including draft and sent messages
  • Labels and sublabels
  • Attachments to email messages
  • Read and unread status
  • Stars

Monitoring points for migrations

  • Email messages from Google Groups don't migrate.
  • Confidential email messages migrate, but their verification isn't updated.
  • Dynamic email messages migrate as standard (simple) messages.
  • The migration process doesn't modify the sender and recipient IDs (including Bcc and Cc recipients).
  • Snoozed or scheduled messages get the All Mail label on the target account and not the Snoozed or Scheduled labels.
  • Messages with the Chat label get the Migrated Chat label on the target account.
  • For delta migrations:
    • Updated drafts migrate as new drafts, and previous versions aren't deleted from the target account.
    • If a user sends a draft message following the main migration, the new data migration service migrates the sent message and doesn't delete the original draft.

Get ready to migrate

Before you migrate data, complete the following in your new Google Workspace account:

  • If you're using the Essentials edition, you must verify your domain before you begin. For details, go to Verify your domain to unlock features.
  • If you're not using the Essentials edition, you can verify your domain before or after you run a migration.
  • You must give each user a user account before they can sign in and use Google services. The new data migration service only migrates data to accounts of existing users. It doesn't create user accounts from the data it migrates. For details about user accounts, go to Options for adding users.
  • Turn on the Gmail service. For details, go to Turn a service on or off for Google Workspace users.
  • Before your users start to use Google services in your new account, they need a user license for the account. For details, go to How licensing works.

You don't need to turn on IMAP in your source or target account. The new data migration service uses the Gmail API to migrate data.
