Set up Gmail with Google Apps (MX Records)

About Gmail and MX records

To use Gmail with Google Apps, you must set up your domain's MX records. The MX records are stored at your domain host and will direct your messages to Google mail servers. It’s like registering your new address with the post office so that your mail gets delivered.

If you're already using email with your domain, you'll start receiving messages in Gmail instead of your old email provider.

MX setup for your domain host (recommended)

See the step-by-step MX setup instructions for your domain host — for example, GoDaddy, Enom, 1&1, Dreamhost, and other domain hosts.

If you purchased your domain when you signed up for Google Apps: Your email is already set up. Sign in to Gmail with your Google Apps user name (contains your domain name, not @gmail.com).

MX setup (generic)

If you don’t find instructions for your domain host, use these general steps.

  1. Sign in to your domain's account at your domain host. Who is my domain host?

    Just in case: If you’d like help with setting up the MX records, you can contact your domain host’s Support team. Domain hosts are experts with MX records, and setup is a common task.

  2. Locate the page for updating your domain’s MX records. The page may be named something like DNS Management, Name Server Management, or Advanced Settings.
  3. Add new MX records for the Google mail servers.

    If your host limits the number of MX records, just add the first 2 records in this table.

  4. Delete any MX records not pointing to our servers, or just make sure that your new Google records have a lower priority number (1 being the lowest) than the existing records.
  5. Save your changes.

After the MX records take effect, you can send and receive messages at your new Google Apps email address. MX record changes can take up to 72 hours, but they typically happen much sooner.

In the meantime, you can get your messages at your old email client.
