My Enter Key isn't working with android apps

An example of the problem would be in slack.  When I type my message I would normally go to press enter and it would send the message.  It is either acting as tab going to the next selectable item or doing nothing at all.

My current version is 75.0.3770.54 (Official Build) beta (64-bit)

There is an open bug report on this problem
https://crbug.com/1021729

You can go to that bug and describe what you are experiencing. If you "star" the bug, you will get updates as they happen.

A fix has been posted here:

Developers of Android apps can insert a small piece of code into their apps to eliminate the problem with the Enter key not working in editing/data entry on some Chromebooks.

Also, the poster says that the problem may be fixed in Chrome OS 81, but this has not been officially confirmed.

So pass this fix on to the developers of whatever Android apps you're using on your Chromebooks.

Yay!!!

BTW, have you tried shift + enter? That works in some of my Android apps.

I'm not seeing similar reports, so the first thing to do is to see if there is something about your setup that is causing the issue.
  • Have you manually changed any flags on the chrome://flags page? If so, click the "Reset all to default" button, restart, and test again.
  • Are you in Developer Mode? If so, you may have done something there that caused the issue and you will have to do a Recovery or seek help elsewhere. This forum does not support issues that happen in developer mode.
  • Shut down and reboot. Don't just close the lid, do a complete shut down.
  • Do a Hardware Reset. Note that this is not the same as the other types of resets listed below!
  • Sign out of your profile and test in Guest Mode. If the problem goes away, do a Browser Reset.
  • If you still have the problem, do a Factory Reset (Powerwash).
  • If you still have the problem, do a Recovery.

You should open a bug report at this point.

Go to https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/list and click the "New Issue" button. Include as much detail as you can to document how to reproduce the problem.

Done. Did the search for prior reports first and added myself to: Issue 1021729. Thank you.

I have the same problem on Pixel Slate.  I have tried all of the recommended solutions, including a workaround, but the issue persists.  Some apps the Enter key does not produce a carriage return.  This only happens with physical keyboards.  I have reproduced this on the Google branded Pixel Slate keyboard and with a Logitech keyboard.  The on-screen keyboard works fine.

I have the same problem with some apps (e.g. Blue Mail, Outlook for Android) on an Asus C302C, OS is 78.0.3904.106 (Official Build) (64-bit). It's just silly.

I have done some testing, and found that this issue doesn't happen for me in Google Keep, but does happen in X-plore as well as FM+, and only on 64-bit machines, not on a 32-bit Chromebook.

I have sent a bug report to Google. Here is the text of my report:

In certain Android apps, including File Manager+ and X-plore, when using the app's embedded text editor, the Enter key does not work. I must hold down the Shift key before pressing the Enter key.

This happens on this machine as well as an Acer 11, which also has a 64-bit Celeron.

It does not happen on an Asus Flip C-100PA, which has a 32-bit Rockchip. On the Flip, the Enter key works as normal.

I hope that sooner or later, Google will fix this. It's a small bug, but it's very annoying when it happens in a program that I use many times a day, such as FM+. Thanks to everyone for your responses.

I will also post on the bug report mentioned here.

Joe Ellett said:
This is a situation where apps have to be coded in a certain way to properly accept the enter key. Most apps accept enter correctly but several do not. Their devs need to do a little bit of coding to make this work under Chrome OS, since in Chrome OS the keyboard is virtualized. Please use the app's link in their Play Store page to contact the app's developers and let them know about the situation.
Joe, could you please give us some information about the nature of the fix that the developers need to apply to their code? Then we can contact them and let them know what to do.

I've already contacted one developer, and he responded, but he did not have any information regarding how to fix his app. I'm sure if we can get the info out there, he and other developers will be glad to respond.

Thanks!

This is a user-to-user community so you're not talking to Google devs here. The information that app developers need should be available in the Google developer web site, but since I'm not a developer, I can't tell you where.

The place to start is developers.google.com.

For those who have recently posted about the Facebook Messenger app, Messenger is a widely-known "bad actor". Uninstall it and try Messenger Lite. That works for most people.

If you are one of the rare people who still have a problem with the Lite app, uninstall it and navigate your browser to messenger.com. That seems to work for everyone.
