I forgot my Google/Gmail password — Frequently Asked Questions

Important: This is a community of Google users. We can't recover your account. We can only give you information. Here are answers to some of the most common questions users ask about how to recover an account without the account password.
How can I recover my account if I forgot my password?
If you forgot your password, the only place to ask for recovery of your free Google/Gmail account is here: https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery. Nobody can recover your account for you. You need to do it yourself. You need both a recovery phone number and a separate, different recovery email already set up in your account and kept up to date, and you need access to both. Without those two main recovery options, you probably won't be able to recover the account.
I'm not allowed to post my account/email name in the Community.
Your account or email name isn't needed here. Nobody but you can use Google's account recovery process.
I don’t have a recovery phone or email.
Without the account password, if you don't have access to both a recovery phone and a recovery email, you probably won't be able to recover the account.
I don't have the recovery phone, but I can provide its number.
That is no use to Google. You need the phone to receive the recovery code Google sends, so you can input the code into the recovery form.
I have a different phone or email I could use for recovery, but Google doesn't ask for it.
Any recovery phone or email must be already recorded in the account. It can't be provided during account recovery.
I forgot my account name as well as my password.

How do I contact a Google customer service agent about recovering my account?
You can’t. Google doesn't provide any form of live support for recovery of free accounts. The recovery process is completely automated.
Please send me a link to reset my password.
Google will ask you to set a new password when you have proved that you own the account by going through the recovery process here: https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery
Why does Google send a recovery code to the account I’m trying to recover?
That may happen if you don't have a separate, different recovery email already set up in your account, that Google can send a recovery code to. Google may send the code to the only email address available: your account. That could be useful if you already had it set up to forward its mail to a different, accessible email. It's also possible Google may think you're signed in to the account on a different device. However, if you can't access the code, you won't be able to recover the account.
Google says I haven’t provided enough information.
A message like "You didn't provide enough info for Google to be sure that this account is really yours" or “Google couldn’t verify that this account belongs to you” usually means that you haven't set up enough recovery options (recovery phone, recovery email) in your account for Google to send recovery codes to, or you haven't been able to access the recovery codes sent to those recovery options.
Google doesn’t ask me any personal security questions
Google no longer uses personal security questions to verify account ownership.
Why does Google tell me I've had “Too many failed attempts”?
If you see a message "Too Many Failed Attempts” it means you've tried the recovery process too many times in a short period. Wait at least 7 days before trying again, and then try to provide better answers. If you can't provide better or different answers, there's no point in trying the recovery process again. You won't be able to recover the account.
Google couldn’t find my account.
If Google displays a message like "Couldn't find your Google account", there are only two possibilities:
- You have entered the account name incorrectly, or
- The account has been permanently deleted
Carefully check the spelling of your account name, including the part after "@".
There's no way to recover a permanently deleted Google account. Also, there's no way to create a new account with the same name. Google account names can never be re-used, so you'll see a message that the name already exists.
I updated my recovery phone in my account, but Google still sends a code to my old phone.
If you only recently updated the recovery phone number in your Google account, it will be at least 7 days before Google starts using the new number to verify account ownership. See: Change the phone number on your account & how it's used - Google Account Help
Google wants me to input an 8-digit backup code, but I don’t have any.
If you set up 2-Step Verification, you would have been given the option to download a set of 8-digit backup codes to keep in a safe place. If you don’t have them, you’ll just need to “Try another way”.
Can you update my recovery phone or email in my account, so I can get recovery codes?
No. Only you can change or update any recovery details in your account, and you need to be signed in to the account to do it.
I remember a previous password. How can I get Google to ask me for that?
You can’t. Google may ask you for a previous password as part of the recovery process, but there’s no way to force the question.
How can I send Google information to prove who I am?
There’s no way to provide any information that Google doesn’t ask for as part of the recovery process. In any case, proving who you are doesn’t prove that you own the account.
Recovery didn't work. Please give me other options.
The only place to ask for recovery of your free Google/Gmail account is here: https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery. There are no other options.
My account has been hacked, and details have been changed.
