I can't download videos

If you’re having trouble downloading videos on your internet browser or mobile device, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

If your YouTube Premium membership ends, you will no longer have access to your downloaded videos.

Troubleshooting steps

Try to sign in to YouTube Premium again

Problem: You’re not signed into YouTube Premium.

Solution: Make sure you are logged into the account associated with your YouTube Premium membership.

  • Try signing out and signing back into the account associated with YouTube Premium.
  • Check that you see the YouTube Premium logo (instead of the YouTube logo) in YouTube.

Check your membership status

Problem: Your YouTube Premium membership might have expired.

Solution:

Make sure your YouTube Premium membership has not expired.

In the YouTube app, tap your profile photo and then Settings and then Purchases and memberships.

  • If you recently lost access to YouTube Premium and resubscribed, it will take a few hours for saved videos to show once you've resubscribed.
  • If you have to watch a video right away, tap Menu Three-dot menu vertical and select Retry download.
  • If your YouTube Premium membership ends, you will no longer have access to your downloaded videos. To regain access to your downloads, sign up for a Premium membership.

Check internet connection strength

Problem: A weak internet connection can hinder downloads.

Solution: Video downloads require a strong internet connection. Make sure that your device is connected to a 3mbps or faster Wi-Fi network, or a mobile network with a data plan that supports 3G, 4G, or LTE speeds. If you're not sure what your current internet speed is, you can test your speed online.

Check mobile data usage

Problem: If you’re using a mobile device, you may have reached your mobile data limit.

Solution: If you're using mobile data, check your data usage. If you've reached your limit, you'll need to connect to Wi-Fi or purchase more data to download videos. Check the settings on your mobile device to ensure you have enabled background data for YouTube.

Check download device limit

Problem: You might have reached the maximum number of devices allowed for downloading with YouTube Premium.

Solution: Check how many devices you've used for downloads. If you've hit the limit, you'll need to free up a slot by removing downloads from unused devices. Learn more about device limits on YouTube Premium.
