CPC (Cost per Click) Sources (Urchin 6.5+)

CPC (Cost per Click) Sources (Urchin 6.5+)

Urchin 6.5 features a new type of data source: Cost Per Click (CPC) Source. Somewhat similar to log sources, CPC Sources enable automatic extraction of CPC Campaign Data from external sources. Linked with existing profiles like Log Sources and Filters, CPC sources enable automatic inclusion of CPC Data into Urchin reports. CPC Sources may be created for Google AdWords (Urchin 6.5+) and Yahoo! Search Marketing (Urchin 6.6+).

Note: Due to AdWords Starter Edition limitations, CPC Sources will not work for AdWords Starter Edition accounts. To use CPC Sources, you'll need to upgrade to the AdWords Standard Edition.

Important Note regarding 6.500 to 6.501 upgrades: When upgrading from 6.500 to 6.501, you must manually delete your old CPC data. To do this, delete all contents of the following directories:

<path_to_urchin_6500_installation>/data/cpc/...
<path_to_urchin_6500_installation>/data/history/cpc/...

Scheduling the CPC Source

On the Schedule tab of the Edit CPC Source screen, you’ll be able to define your CPC Source Download settings:

  • - Schedule – Download Interval – CPC Download is split into two distinct stages. In first stage, the CPC credentials are validated and the report request is made to the CPC server. In the second stage, report availability is checked periodically until it becomes available. The second stage ends with the actual download of the report. It takes some time before a report becomes available on the server, depending upon the number of campaigns in the account, the amount of data retrieved, the current load of the servers, etc. This interval determines when Urchin starts checking the availability of report after it has been requested. The general suggestion here is to set this interval to higher values for very large accounts that have a large amount of click traffic.

    - Download - Hour of the Day – here you can configure the time of the day when the updated report for this CPC Source should be downloaded. IMPORTANT: Since CPC data is extracted on a daily (and not hourly) schedule, we highly recommend that you allow at least 2 hours after the full day is complete in your AdWords or YSM account timezone before downloading. This will ensure that all CPC data for the day is available on AdWords and YSM servers. It's best to schedule profiles with CPC Sources so that they process after the CPC data has been downloaded. This way, you'll get the latest CPC data in your reports.

    - Account Data - Download Interval (only for AdWords in Urchin 6.6+) - use this option to set the Download Interval for the AdWords account structure download. The AdWords Account structure must be downloaded before you can view Campaign and Keyword metadata or use the Keyword Generator, Copy Campaign, and AdWords Tag Manager tools.
