Glossary

The following is a list of terms common to Building Maker:

Aerial image - Image (photo) taken from a plane.

Block - A 3 dimensional geometric shape used to represent some part of a building or structure.

Building - A collection of blocks.

Building Maker - An easy-to-use tool for creating three-dimensional (3D) buildings.

Constraint - A point of a block that has been placed on a specific location, such as the corner of a building, in a 2D image. Points that are placed at a specific location do not move when other points are moved and are said to be "constrained." Points that are not fixed are "unconstrained." The color of a block is orange when all points are unconstrained, and blue when at least one point is constrained.

Context Click - The action of clicking the right mouse button while the cursor is over an element on the screen such as a block.

Context Menu - A menu of items or commands available in a particular context, such as when a line or block is selected.

Editor - The second screen within Building Maker for creating and editing your building.

Freeform Block - A block allowing you to create free-form shapes by adding additional points.

Location Picker - The initial screen within Building Maker for selecting a city and then building to create. The Location Picker has four views: Map, Satellite, Hybrid, and Earth.

Oblique Image - An image taken from some angle other than parallel (standing over) or perpendicular (standing in front of) to the subject.

Occlusion - Refers to one object blocking another object. In Building maker, occlusion refers to an object (another building, a vehicle, a tree, and so on) blocking the view of a building when aerial photos were originally taken. Images applied to a building's blocks during photo texturing might appear incomplete in the event that the building is occluded by another object. This issue is addressed by users modeling the objects that are blocking the original building. Occlusion appears primarily in dense metropolitan areas.

Orthogonal Image - An image taken from a top down or parallel angle.

Photo Texturing - The process of wrapping aerial images on a building facade.

Point - The intersection of two or more lines in a block.

Place Marker - A visual cue indicating a city or building in Building Maker.

Viewer - A web version of Google Earth for viewing your Building Maker buildings.
