Wmode (layering) issues

  • Explanation
Wmode is the window mode setting for Flash ads and video players. The possible values for this attribute are window, opaque, and transparent.

    • Window: Use this to play a Flash Player movie in its own rectangular window on a web page. This is the default wmode value, and it works like the classic Flash Player.

This mode places the ad in a window that overlays page content, so the z-index has no effect. This setting is not recommended as it can cause some expandable ads to malfunction.

    • Opaque: Lets you use JavaScript to move or resize movies that don't need a transparent background. This mode makes everything on the page hide behind the movie. It also moves elements behind Flash movies (for example, with dynamic HTML) to prevent them from showing through.

    • Transparent: Allows the background of the HTML page, or the DHTML layer underneath the Flash movie or layer, to show through all the transparent portions of the movie. This lets you overlap the movie with other elements of the HTML page.

  • Symptoms
Issues can occur with this setting when an ad expands under another object on the page, often a Flash player.

  • How can I avoid this?
    • If you're a site publisher, set the wmode to transparent or opaque for other objects on the site (such as video players) that might appear over the ad's expansion.

    • DFP publishers can change the wmode of the ad on their site using DFP or change the wmode of their own site content.

    • If you're an agency or advertiser, set the wmode attribute of the ad in the Assets tab at the creative level in DFA Trafficking.

  • How do I troubleshoot this?
Walk through An expanding ad unit is not expanding out of placement and/or over page content.
