The dynamic profile is where you describe the data to be pulled in to a dynamic ad at impression time. Using a dynamic profile, you can modify data without having to re-traffic a creative, allowing for instantaneous changes to ads and saving time and money.
You set up a dynamic profile using the Rich Media Dynamic Ads (RMDA) content management system (CMS) in the Studio Web UI.
1. Create a dynamic profile to contain your dynamic data
- In the Dynamic Ads UI, click Create New Profile.
- Enter a name for the profile and click OK.
An empty profile opens. - To enter a description of the profile, click the link at the top of the page: click here to edit the profile description.
- Enter a description and click OK.
2. Add data to the profile
There are several types of ad elements you can use:
-
Fixed Ad Elements
- Click Add Element at the top of the page.
A new element is added to the profile. - Enter a name for the element in the Ad Element name field (no spaces permitted).
- Select an element Type from the drop-down and enter a Value:
- Text: Enter a message you want to display in the ad.
- Number: Enter values for numerical calculations, like image size or position. For example, Element name: xcoord Value: 100. (Value must be numbers only, no decimals.)
- Image: Click upload to browse for a dynamic image.
- URL: Refer to a URL address.
- Boolean: Enter a search string.
- Click Add.
- Repeat for each new dynamic element.
- Click Save when done.
- Use the profile navigation breadcrumbs (for example, Profiles list > My Profile) at the top of the page to return to the main CMS screen.
- Click Add Element at the top of the page.
-
Fixed Ad Element Group
You can group fixed ad elements into folders for better visual organization within the CMS. In addition, fixed ad element groups are shortcuts for adding multiple dynamic elements to a profile at once.
- Select Fixed Ad Element Group from the drop-down and click Add.
- The Group details screen appears, where you can add fixed ad elements as described in the section above.
- Click Save when done.
- Use the profile navigation breadcrumbs to return to the main CMS screen.
For now, you can't move fixed ad elements in and out of groups, so plan your groupings carefully. -
Random Ad Element Group
You can group ad elements into folders that are randomly selected with each ad impression. (Distribution is uniformly random, and each value set has the same probability of appearing.)
- Select Random Ad Element Group from the drop-down and click Add.
- The Group details screen appears, where you can create value sets of elements to be randomly selected.
- Identify the random ad elements you want to group together. If these already exist as fixed ad elements in your profile, click Use existing Element or create a new one by clicking Add Element.
- Repeat Step 3 as necessary. All the ad elements are entered into the default starting value set.
- To add multiple value sets, click Add Value Set. All the ad elements from the first value set are copied to each additional one.
- Edit the values of the ad elements you want to change in each subsequent value set. It's important to remember that each value set has the same odds of being randomly selected at ad impression time, and that all the ad element values within that set are served together.
- Click Save when done.
- Use the profile navigation breadcrumbs to return to the main CMS screen.
If you delete an element from one value set, it's deleted from all other value sets.

External Data Ad Element
External data ad elements are enabled on a per-account level. Please contact your Rich Media campaign manager or technical support to request this feature, and provide the email address associated with your Studio account when you do so.External elements let you call an external server to bring data into the creative. As part of the call, you can include query parameters with additional contextual information, like geographic region or DFA macros.
- Select External Data Ad Element from the drop-down and click Add.
The Details screen appears, where you can configure the parameters for this ad element. - Enter an Ad Element name to be used in the dynamic creative to identify this instance of an external data ad element.
- Enter the URL of the server that provides the data used by this ad element.
- Select required context parameters.
The choices you make here allow an external server to be called to bring data into the creative, including query parameters with contextual information such as geo data or DFA macros. For more information, see Third-Party Data Feed Documentation.
- Click Save when done.
- Use the profile navigation breadcrumbs to return to the main CMS screen.
- Select External Data Ad Element from the drop-down and click Add.
-
Conditional Ad Element Group
Conditional rules allow ad content to be selected based on context parameters. For example, you can use a conditional rule to localize an ad with a geo-specific message. In this case, the rule serves language strings based on the country the viewer's in, as determined by certain signals.
- Select Conditional Ad Element Group from the drop-down and click Add.
The Conditional Rule screen appears, where you can create value sets for conditional parameters. - Select a parameter from the Condition drop-down--either Country Code or one of various DART parameters.
DART parameters represent conditions of your ad, for example, if the ad is displayed on a designated DART site ID, the values you select, next, will be turned on. - Enter a name for the element in the Ad Element name field (no spaces permitted).
- Select an element Type from the drop-down and enter a Value:
- Text: Enter a message you want to display conditionally in the ad.
- Number: Enter values for numerical calculations, like image size or position. For example, Element name: xcoord Value: 100. (Value must be numbers only, no decimals.)
- Image: Click upload to browse for an image you want to display conditionally, like a logo for French speakers.
- URL: Refer to a URL address.
- Boolean: Enter a search string.
- Click Add.
- Click Add Value Set and, from the When drop-down, select a condition. For example, if you're using Country Code, select United States. If you're using DART Site Name, select www.google.com.
- Add more value sets if you want.
- Click Save.
- Click Add Element to add another one.
You can edit profile and group names by clicking on the blue text of these headings. - Select Conditional Ad Element Group from the drop-down and click Add.
-
Scheduled Ad Element Group
You can schedule a time period, with start and end dates, during which selected ad content will run.
- Select Scheduled Ad Element Group from the drop-down and click Add.
- Select a Time Zone by clearing the field and typing a location (for example, Japan or New York). Time zones auto-complete as you type.
- Click Add Element.
- Enter a name for the element in the Ad Element name field (no spaces permitted).
- Select an element Type from the drop-down and enter a Value. (This is the ad content that will run according to the schedule you set in Step 7.)
- Text: Enter a message you want to display in the ad.
- Number: Enter values for numerical calculations, like image size or position. For example, Element name: xcoord Value: 100. (Value must be numbers only, no decimals.)
- Image: Click upload to browse for an image you want to display conditionally, like a logo for French speakers.
- URL: Refer to a URL address.
- Boolean: Enter a search string.
- Click Add Value Set.
- Click on the date range field and select a Start date and End date from the dialog box.
- Click OK.
- Click Save.
The first scheduled rule that matches the current time is the rule that gets implemented. "First" means whichever rule appears at the top of the UI.
You can adjust settings for the rule in the Previews section by making changes and clicking Update.
3. Manage the profile
After you've configured the dynamic ad elements, complete the configuration of the profile and preview the creative:
- Click Add Creative in the bottom pane to select the creative in which the dynamic content will appear.
This button takes you to DoubleClick Studio, where you can follow the creative workflow to upload the creative. - Back in the RMDA UI, you can preview the creative as you make your changes in the Previews pane on the right. Check Auto refresh to ensure that the preview refreshes automatically with each change. To trade the Previews pane with the Creatives pane at the bottom of the display, click
.
Left-expanding creatives appear cut off because the ad slot is forced flush left in the RMDA UI Previews pane. To view the entire expanded creative, create a copy of it, with the ad size set to the fully expanded dimensions (for preview purposes only). - Check Show published versions to display a second copy of each creative with currently published data. This allows you to compare changes in progress to those already published.
- Check Preview impression context to view the creative in its intended context, for example, as translated into a different language.
- Click Location parameters to select a country from the drop-down, then click Update.
- Click DART parameters, select a parameter from the drop-down, enter a value click Update. (For more on DART parameters, see Third-Party Data Feed Documentation.)
Impression context isn’t reflected in published versions of the creative.
- To share the profile, click Share, enter an email address, click a radio button for the role of the addressee, and click OK.
- Click Publish to push changes live.
- To access a different profile, click Profiles list at the top of the page.
4. Access dynamic data
To load the dynamic data into your Flash movie, use the profile ID.
- In the dynamic profile, locate the ID that appears next to the name of the profile at the top, for example:
z-Xk0gj_Qh--HNmrqr_2-g. - Copy and paste the ID in the Setup panel of the Dynamic Enabler in your Flash movie.
Your ad is now connected to your data and will replicate any changes you make in the RMDA UI.
5. Edit dynamic data
To edit existing dynamic data:
- In the RMDA UI, click the name of the profile that contains the data you want to edit.
- Change values as needed and click Save.
- To preview changes in a creative, associate your RMDA profile to a dynamic DoubleClick Studio creative with that profile ID (IDs are listed at the bottom of the screen). Then view the creative, with the profile data, in the Preview pane.
If you're using conditional or scheduled rules, you can also preview how the creative would appear under certain conditions (e.g. filtered by country or a specific ad-server ID value) or at certain times. - Click Publish to push the changes live.
