Walking, biking and public transit directions

Getting public transit directions

This feature is available if Google has public transit information for the area displayed. Learn more.

You can find public transportation routes as part of your directions. To do this:

  1. Get directions (learn more).
  2. Select "By public transit" in the drop down menu and click "Get Directions". Google Maps suggests trips for you to take, which may contain different modes of transportation. For example, one trip may include a train while another includes a bus. Click a trip to see the route displayed on the map.
  3. To customize your search:
    1. Click Options.
    2. Enter your date and departure or arrival time.
    3. Click Update.

Getting walking directions

You can find walking routes as part of your directions. To get walking directions, click on "Get Directions" and select "Walking" from the drop down menu. Google Maps suggests directions that are optimized for walking. For example, the route may avoid major roads, use pedestrian walkways.

Getting biking directions

You can get routes customized for cyclists by selecting "Bicycling" from the travel mode dropdown box, and clicking on "Get Directions". These routes are created using several different kinds of roads and paths, indicated on the map.

  • A darker green line indicates bike trails where there are no motor vehicles.
  • A lighter green line indicates streets with bike lanes.
  • A green and white dotted line indicates streets recommended for cyclists, but without a bike lane.

Biking directions are available in 14 countries and over 150 U.S. cities. These countries include: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Sweden, and the US.
