You can retrieve your Gmail messages with a client or device that supports IMAP, like Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail.

To enable IMAP in Gmail:

1. Sign in to Gmail.
2. Click the gear icon in the upper-right and select Gmail settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
4. Select Enable IMAP.
5. Configure your IMAP client and click Save Changes.

Note: At this time, it's not possible to enable IMAP while using the basic HTML interface. Please use the standard view to see this option.

To configure the 'Email' app on an Android device for access to Gmail, just follow the steps below:

1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.
2. On your phone, press < Home >, then open the Email application.
3. On the 'Your accounts' page, select Next to get started with setup.
4. Enter your full Gmail address and password, then select Next.
5. On the next screen, you can give the account a nickname and choose the name to display on your outgoing messages. Tap Done.

And you're done. You can verify your settings from the Inbox view by tapping < Menu > > Account settings.

Incoming settings
IMAP server: imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Security type: SSL (always)

Outgoing settings
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Security type: SSL (always)

Note: While setup instructions are provided below, Gmail IMAP access is not officially supported for BlackBerry devices at this time.

To set up the BlackBerry's email client with Gmail (IMAP), just follow these steps:

1. On your BlackBerry device, navigate to your home screen
2. Select the icon that lets you set up email (this can be called Setup, Setup Wizard, Email Setup, BlackBerry Set-up, E-mail settings, or Personal Email Set-up)
3. Follow the setup instructions provided on your device

If setup is successful, you should receive a confirmation message and a new mailbox icon should appear on your device's home screen, labeled with your Gmail address.

If you encounter a problem during setup, please make sure you have enabled IMAP in your main Gmail settings.

Note: These setup instructions are for Apple devices running software version 4.0.
View instructions for older software.

To configure the 'Mail' app on an Apple device for access to Gmail, just follow these steps:

1. Make sure you've enabled IMAP in your main Gmail settings
2. Open the Settings app on your device
3. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
4. Tap Add Account...
5. Tap Gmail
6. Enter your account information, being sure to use your full Gmail address, including '@gmail.com'
7. Tap Next
8. Tap Save

And you're done. You can add additional Gmail accounts by repeating the same steps above.

Now that your account is set up, learn how actions in your client sync with Gmail.

To set up your Outlook 2003 client to work with Gmail:

1. Enable IMAP in Gmail. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Outlook.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select E-mail Accounts...
4. Click Add a new e-mail account, then click Next.
5. Choose IMAP as your server type by clicking the radio button, and click Next.
6. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

   User Information
   Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of outgoing messages.
   Email Address: Enter your full email address (username@gmail.com). Google Apps users, enter your address in the format username@your_domain.com

   Server Information
   Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.gmail.com
   Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

   Login Information
   User Name: Enter your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
   Password: Enter your Gmail password.

   

7. Click More Settings... and then click the Outgoing Server tab.
8. Check the box next to 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

   

9. Click the Advanced tab, and check the box next to 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)' under Incoming Server (IMAP). Also, enter 993 in the Incoming server (IMAP) box.

   

10. Check the box next to 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)' under Outgoing Server (SMTP), and enter 465 in the Outgoing server (SMTP) box.
11. Click OK.
12. Click Next, and then click Finish.
13. Download the latest updates for Outlook from Microsoft. This will help prevent the most common Outlook errors that Gmail users see.
14. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

Congratulations! You're done configuring your client to send and retrieve Gmail messages.

To set up your Outlook 2007 client to work with Gmail:

1. Enable IMAP in Gmail. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Outlook.
3. For new setups, select Do not upgrade.
4. Click Yes.
5. Enter your display name, email address (including '@gmail.com'), and password. Google Apps users, enter your full email address, e.g. 'username@your_domain.com.'
6. Select the 'Manually configure server settings or additional server types' checkbox.




7. Select Internet E-mail.
8. Settings: name, full email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com')
   • In the Account Type dropdown menu, select IMAP. In the 'Incoming server name' section, enter: imap.gmail.com and in the 'Outgoing server name (SMTP)' section, enter: smtp.gmail.com.
   • In the 'User Name' field, give your full Gmail address, including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com.'
   • After creating these settings, clicking Next takes you to the end of the setup.
   
   
   
   
9. In the Tools menu, select Options then Mail Setup. Under 'Email Accounts,' click E-mail Accounts.
10. Select an account, and click Change above the list of accounts. Click More Settings, then the Advanced tab.
    • Incoming server must be 993, and must use SSL encryption.
    • Outgoing server can use 587, TLS encryption.
    
    
    
    
11. Click the Outgoing Server tab. Make sure that 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' is selected. The radio button 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server' should also be selected.




12. Click OK > Next > Finish > Close > OK.
13. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

To set up your Outlook Express client to work with Gmail:

1. Enable IMAP in Gmail. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Outlook Express.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select Accounts...
4. Click Add, and then click Mail...
5. Enter your name in the 'Display name' field, and click Next.
6. Enter your full email address (username@gmail.com) in the 'Email address' field, and click Next. If you are a Google Apps user, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'
7. For 'My incoming mail server is a ______ server', please select IMAP in the drop-down menu.
8. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the 'Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server' field. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server' field.
9. Click Next.
10. Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') in the 'Account name' field. Enter your password in the 'Password' field, and click Next.



11. Click Finish.
12. Highlight imap.gmail.com under Account, and click Properties.
13. Click the Advanced tab.
14. Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), check the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL).'
15. Enter '465' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP)' field.
16. Under Incoming mail (IMAP), check the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)'. The port will change to '993'.



17. Click the Servers tab, and check the box next to 'My server requires authentication.'

    

18. Click OK.
19. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

Congratulations! You're done configuring your client to send and retrieve Gmail messages.

Please note that if you're adding your Gmail address to Apple Mail 3.0 for the first time, your mail will be automatically configured for POP access. In order to configure IMAP, please follow these steps:

1. Click Mail > Preferences....
2. On the Accounts tab, click the + button to add a new account.
3. Fill in the new window with the following information:
• Full Name: [your name]
• Email Address: your full email address [username@gmail.com, or username@your_domain.com for Google Apps users]
• Password: your Gmail password
• Important: please deselect the box next to 'Automatically set up account'
4. Click Create.
5. Fill in the following Incoming Mail Server information:
• Account Type: Select IMAP
• Incoming Mail Server: Change this to imap.gmail.com
• User Name: your full email address [username@gmail.com, or username@your_domain.com for Google Apps users]
• Password: your Gmail password
6. Click Continue.
7. Enter the following Outgoing Mail Server information:
• Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
• Use Authentication: selected
• User Name: your full Gmail address [username@gmail.com, or username@your_domain.com for Google Apps users]
• Password: your Gmail password
8. Click Continue.
9. Review your Account Summary, and click Create.
10. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

You're done!

Please note that if you're adding your Gmail address to Apple Mail 4.0 for the first time with automatic configuration, your mail will automatically be configured for IMAP access.

If you’re trying to configure an additional Gmail address with IMAP access, please follow these steps:

1. Click Mail > Preferences....
2. On the Accounts tab, click the + button to add a new account.
3. Fill in the Welcome to Mail window with the following information:
• Full Name: [your name]
• Email Address: your full email address [username@gmail.com, or username@your_domain.com for Google Apps users]
• Password: your Gmail password
4. Click Create, verify your Account Summary, and you’re all set!
• Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

If you’d like to verify your IMAP settings after you have configured your mail client, you can view this through the Accounts tab by going through Mail > Preferences... The settings should be as follows:

To review your port number information, click on the Advanced tab.

Note: if you're using an older version of Thunderbird, we highly recommend upgrading to version 2.0.

To set up your Thunderbird client to work with Gmail:

1. Enable IMAP in Gmail. Make sure you click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Thunderbird, and select Tools > Account Settings.
3. Click Add Account.
4. Select the Email account radio button and click Next. The Identity screen appears.
5. Enter your full name in the Your Name field. Enter your Gmail address (username@gmail.com) in the Email Address field, and click Next. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format username@your_domain.com
6. Select IMAP as the type of incoming server you are using. Enter imap.gmail.com in the Incoming Server field.
7. Set the Outgoing Server to smtp.gmail.com and click Next.



8. Enter your full email address (including @gmail.com @your_domain.com) in the Incoming User Name and Outgoing User Name fields, and click Next.



9. Enter a name for your email account in the Account Name field, and click Next.
10. Verify your account information in the dialog box, and click Finish.
11. Select Server Settings from the folder list below your new account.
12. Update the Port value to 993.
13. In the Security Settings section, select SSL from the Use secure connection options.
14. Select the 'Check for messages at startup' checkbox and the 'Check for new messages every 10 minutes' checkbox.
15. Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the folder list.



16. Select the smtp.gmail.com (Default) entry from the list and click Edit. The SMTP Server page appears.
17. Enter smtp.gmail.com as the Server Name and set the Port to 587*.
    *Alternatively, you can set the Port number to 465, as long as you choose SSL as your secure connection.
18. Select User name and password and enter your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com) in the User Name field.
19. Select TLS from the Use secure connection radio buttons and click OK.
20. Click OK to save your changes and exit the Account Settings dialog.



21. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

Please note that with Thunderbird 3.0, you'll automatically be configured with IMAP. If you’d like to add additional email accounts with IMAP access, please see the instructions below.

To set up your Thunderbird client to work with Gmail:

1. As a reminder, please make sure to Enable IMAP in Gmail and click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Thunderbird.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select Account Settings...
4. Select Add Mail Account... from the drop-down list located under the account list on the left.


5. The first dialog in Thunderbird’s Automatic Account Configuration will be displayed. Enter your name, your Gmail email address and your password. Click Continue.


6. Thunderbird will query the Gmail server and automatically configure the appropriate IMAP connection settings for your account. When complete, Thunderbird will show you a confirmation dialog similar to this one:


7. Confirm that the connection settings are the same as those shown above and click Create Account.
8. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

To set up your Windows Mail client to work with Gmail, just follow these steps:

1. Open Windows Mail. The wizard pops up if it's your first time using it; otherwise, simply click Tools > Accounts > Add.
2. Enter your name, then click Next.


3. Enter your complete Gmail address, and click Next. Google Apps users, enter your address in the format username@your_domain.com.


4. Choose IMAP input given servers, and check 'Outgoing server requires authentication'; click Next.


5. Enter your full email address and password, and click Next.


6. Click through (the checkbox is optional), then click Finish.
7. Select Tools > Accounts > IMAP account, then select Properties > Advanced.
   • Enter port number '465' next to the 'Outgoing Mail (SMTP)' field and port number '993' next to the 'Incoming mail (IMAP)' field. Check both secure connection boxes, and click Apply.
   • Click Close.
   
   
8. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

To configure IMAP for your Windows Mobile 6 device, just follow these steps:

1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.
2. Open the Start menu and select Programs > Messaging > New E-mail Account.
3. Enter your Gmail address (including '@gmail.com') in the E-mail Address field*. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com'*.
   * Windows Mobile 6.1 users: Enter an unintelligible email address (such as 'g@g') at this step. This will bypass the automatic configuration for POP access.
   
4. Uncheck the box that asks to get settings automatically from the Internet and select Next.
5. Select Internet e-mail as your email provider in the drop-down menu.
6. Enter your name as you want it to appear in sent emails.
7. Enter a descriptive name for the email account and select Next.
8. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the Incoming Mail Server field.
9. Select IMAP4 as the Account type from the drop-down menu and select Next.
10. Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') and password.
11. Select Next.
12. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server field.
13. Make sure that the Outgoing server requires authentication box is checked.
14. Select the Advanced Server Settings link.
15. Make sure that the Require SSL box is checked for both incoming and outgoing emails.
16. Select The Internet as the network connection from the drop-down menu.
17. Select Done and then Next.
18. Select how often you want your phone to send/receive emails from the drop-down menu.
19. For more download options, select the Review all download settings link.
20. Select Finish.
21. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

You can use the following information to configure IMAP with many mail clients. If you encounter difficulties, we suggest contacting your mail client's customer support department for further instructions -- we're unable to provide assistance with configuring mail clients not listed here.

Please note that if your client does not support SMTP authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.

Also, if you're having trouble sending mail but you've confirmed that encryption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port: 465 or 587.

You can read your Gmail messages from a client or device that supports POP, like Microsoft Outlook or Netscape Mail.

To enable POP in Gmail:

1. Sign in to Gmail.
2. Click the gear icon in the upper-right and select Mail settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.


4. Select Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on.
5. Choose what to do with your messages after your POP client or device receives them.
6. Configure your POP client* and click Save Changes.

Please note that if you're adding your Gmail address to Apple Mail 4.0 for the first time with automatic configuration, your mail will be configured for IMAP access.

In order to configure POP Gmail account for the first time, please follow these steps carefully:

1. Enable POP. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open your Apple Mail client
3. Fill in the ‘Welcome to Mail’ window with the following information:
• Full Name: [your name]
• Email Address: your full email address [username@gmail.com, or username@your_domain.com for Google Apps users]
• Password: your Gmail password
• Important: Hold the option button down until ‘Create’ turns into ‘Continue’


4. Click Continue
5. Fill in the following Incoming Mail Server information:
• Account Type: Select POP
• Incoming Mail Server: Change this to pop.gmail.com
• User Name: your full email address [username@gmail.com, or username@your_domain.com for Google Apps users]
• Password: your Gmail password
• Important: Hold the option button down until ‘Create’ turns into ‘Continue’


6. Click Continue
7. Incoming Mail Security
• Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): selected
• Authentication: Password
• Important: Hold the option button down until ‘Create’ turns into ‘Continue’


8. Click Continue
9. Enter the following Outgoing Mail Server information:
• You can leave description blank - this field is optional
• Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
• Use Authentication: selected
• User Name: your full Gmail address [username@gmail.com, or username@your_domain.com for Google Apps users]
• Password: your Gmail password
• Important: Hold the option button down until ‘Create’ turns into ‘Continue’


10. Click Continue.
11. Outgoing Mail Security
• Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): selected
• Authentication: Password
• Important: Hold the option button down until ‘Create’ turns into ‘Continue’


12. Click Continue
13. Review your Account Summary and uncheck Take account online as you will need to adjust your incoming port number
14. Click Create


15. Once your client opens, you’ll need to change your incoming port number to 995. To edit your incoming port number, please click Mail>Preferences... > Accounts tab > Advanced
    • Important: Your port number must be 995
    
    
16. After you’ve updated your port number, you can take your accounts online and download new messages by clicking Mailbox > Get All New Mail

If you have already configured Apple Mail 4 for POP and are trying to add an additional email, please start by following these steps:

1. Click Mail > Preferences....
2. On the Accounts tab, click the + button to add a new account.
3. You will then need to repeat the steps above.

BlackBerry Internet Service (version 2.6) no longer supports Gmail POP access.

Instead, integrate Gmail with the BlackBerry's email client using IMAP access.

If you're running software update 1.1.2, here's how to set up POP:

1. Tap Mail from your iPhone's Home screen.
2. Tap Gmail.
3. Enter your name, your Gmail address, and password in the appropriate fields.
4. Tap Save. Now you're done!

If you're running software update 1.1.3, please note that tapping the 'Gmail' button will automatically configure Gmail IMAP. Here's how to set up POP:

1. Tap Mail from your iPhone's Home screen.
2. Tap Other.
3. Select POP from the tab menu.
4. Enter your name, email address, and password in the appropriate fields. The Address field should be your full email address (username@gmail.com). Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'
5. Under Incoming Mail Server, fill in the Host Name field as 'pop.gmail.com.' Google Apps users, enter the server names provided, don't add your domain name in this step.
6. Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), fill in the Host Name field as 'smtp.gmail.com.'
7. Tap Save. Now you're done!

If you notice that POP access isn't working properly, please ensure that all your settings are correct by following these instructions:

1. From the Home menu, tap Settings.
2. Select your Gmail address.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Advanced.
4. Ensure that your settings are as follows:
Incoming Uses SSL: ON
Outgoing Uses SSL: ON
Authentication: Password
If you're accessing your Gmail from multiple POP clients, we recommend setting Use Recent Mode to ON.

To set up your Outlook client to work with Gmail:

1. Enable POP in your email account. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Outlook.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select E-mail Accounts...

5. Choose POP3 as your server type by clicking the radio button, and click Next.
6. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

   User Information
   Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of outgoing messages.
   Email Address: Enter your full email address (username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com)

   Server Information
   Google Apps users, enter the server names provided, don't add your domain name in this step.
   Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.gmail.com
   Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

   Login Information
   User Name: Enter your Gmail username (including @gmail.com). Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format username@your_domain.com
   Password: Enter your email password
   
   
   

7. Click More Settings... and then click the Outgoing Server tab.
8. Check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
   
   
   
9. Click the Advanced tab, and check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Incoming Server (POP3). Enter 995 in the 'Incoming Server' box.
   
   
   
10. Check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Outgoing Server (SMTP), and enter 465 in the Outgoing server (SMTP) box.
11. Click OK.
12. Click Test Account Settings... After receiving Congratulations! All tests completed successfully, click Close.
13. Click Next, and then click Finish.
14. Download the latest updates for Outlook from Microsoft. This will help prevent the most common Outlook errors Gmail users see.

Congratulations! You're done configuring your client to send and retrieve Gmail messages.

To configure Outlook 2007 for your Gmail address:

1. Enable POP in your email account. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Outlook.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select Account Settings...
4. On the E-mail tab, click New...
5. If you are prompted to Choose E-mail Service, select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP, and click Next.
6. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of outgoing messages.
Email Address: Enter your full Gmail email address (username@gmail.com). Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format username@your_domain.com.
Password: Enter your email password.

Manually configure server settings or additional server types: Leave this option unchecked if you want to automatically configure Outlook 2007. If you want to manually configure Outlook 2007, check this box now. Google Apps users should configure manually as follows.



7. Click Next. If you are configuring Outlook 2007 automatically, you're done! Just click Finish.



8. If you are configuring Outlook 2007 manually, select Internet E-mail and click Next.
9. Verify your User Information, and enter the following additional information:

Server Information

Account Type: POP3

Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com (Google Apps users, enter the server names provided, don't add your domain name in these steps)

Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

Logon Information

User Name: Enter your Gmail username (including @gmail.com). Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format username@your_domain.com

Password: Enter your email password.

Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA): Leave this option unchecked.


10. Click the More Settings... button, and select the Outgoing Server tab.
11. Check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.



12. Click the Advanced tab, and check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Incoming Server (POP3). Enter 995 in the 'Incoming Server' box.
13. In the Outgoing server (SMTP) box, enter 587, and select TLS from the drop-down menu next to Use the following type of encrypted connection:.

    

14. Click OK.
15. Click Test Account Settings... After receiving 'Congratulations! All tests completed successfully', click Close.
16. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Congratulations! You're done configuring your client to send and retrieve Gmail messages.

To set up your Outlook Express client to work with Gmail:

1. Enable POP in your email account. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Outlook or Outlook Express.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select Accounts...
4. Click Add, and then click Mail...

5. Enter your name in the Display name: field, and click Next.
6. Enter your full Gmail email address (username@gmail.com) in the Email address: field, and click Next. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'

7. Enter pop.gmail.com in the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: field. Enter smtp.gmail.com in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: field. Google Apps users, enter the server names provided; don't add your domain name in this step.

8. Click Next.
9. Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') in the Account name: field. Enter your email password in the Password: field, and click Next.

10. Click Finish.
11. Highlight pop.gmail.com under Account, and click Properties.

12. Click the Advanced tab.
13. Fill in the following information:*
    • Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Outgoing Mail (SMTP).
    • Enter 465 in the Outgoing mail (SMTP): field.
    • Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
    • Under Incoming mail (POP3), check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port will change to 995.
    

    *The order of Outgoing and Incoming mail server fields varies by version. Make sure you enter the correct information in each field.

14. Return to the Servers tab, and check the box next to My server requires authentication.

15. Click OK.

Congratulations! You're done configuring your client to send and retrieve Gmail messages.

• Please note that with Thunderbird 3.0, you will automatically be configured with IMAP. If you would like to access your mail via POP instead, please follow all steps in the instructions.
• Google Apps users will need to configure POP manually using the special instruction provided.

To configure Thunderbird 3.0 for your Gmail address:

1. Enable POP. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Thunderbird.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select Account Settings...
4. Select Add Mail Account... from the drop-down list located under the account list on the left.



5. The first dialog in Thunderbird’s Automatic Account Configuration will be displayed. Enter your name, your Gmail or Google Apps email address and your password. Click Continue.



6. Thunderbird will query the Gmail server and automatically configure the appropriate IMAP connection settings for your account (if you would like to configure POP instead, please complete the rest of the steps). When complete, Thunderbird will show you a confirmation dialog similar to the following:



7. To use POP instead of IMAP for your incoming messages, click Edit and change the following values:
   • Incoming: change to “pop.gmail.com”
   • Protocol (the drop-down list to the right of the Incoming field): change to “POP”
   • Port (the field to the right of the protocol drop-down list): change to “995”
   
   
   
8. Click Manual Setup to create the account. (You may get an error message that says that the SMTP account already exists. Disregard and clear the message.)

To configure Windows Mail for your Gmail address:

1. Enable POP in your email account. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Open Windows Mail.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select Accounts...
4. Click Add...
5. Select Email Account, and click Next.
6. Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the 'From:' field of outgoing messages, and click Next.
7. Enter your full Gmail address (username@gmail.com). Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'
8. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

Incoming mail server type: POP3

Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: pop.gmail.com. Google Apps users, enter the server name provided, don't add your domain name in these steps.

Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name: smtp.gmail.com

Outgoing server requires authentication: enabled


9. Click Next, and enter your full Gmail address (including '@gmail.com') and your Gmail password. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'

10. Click Next, and then check the box next to Do not download my e-mail at this time. Click Finish.
11. On the Internet Accounts screen, make sure that your pop.gmail.com mail account is selected, and click the Properties button.
12. On the Advanced tab, enter 465 in the in the box next to Outgoing mail (SMTP), and check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
13. Check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Incoming mail (POP3). The box next to Incoming mail (POP3) should automatically update to 995.

14. Click OK. You're done! Close the Internet Accounts window and click Send/Receive to start checking your Gmail messages.

We offer instructions for configuring some clients not in our supported client list. If you encounter difficulties, we suggest contacting your mail client's customer support department -- we're unable to provide assistance for clients not in our supported POP client list.

Standard configuration instructions:

1. Enable POP in Gmail. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
2. Configure your client to match the settings below:

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL:	pop.gmail.com Use SSL: Yes Port: 995
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS or SSL:	smtp.gmail.com (use authentication) Use Authentication: Yes Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587 Port for SSL: 465
Account Name:	your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
Email Address:	your email address (username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com)
Password:	your Gmail password

Unless you're using recent mode to download mail to multiple clients, make sure you've opted not to leave messages on the server. Your POP settings in Gmail settings are what determines whether or not messages stay on the server, so this setting in your client won't affect how Gmail handles your mail.

If your client does not support SMTP authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.

If you're having trouble sending mail but you've confirmed that encryption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port (465 or 587).
