If you're seeing error 0x80040905 when installing, uninstalling, or upgrading Google Earth, please follow these instructions:
Note: Microsoft no longer supports the Windows CleanUp Utility. They discourage it's use because it can damage other components installed on your computer. Please use the utility at your own risk.
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
- Scroll down and select "Google Earth".
- Click Remove, then Yes, then Finish. This may result in an error, which can be ignored.
- Download and run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility at Softpedia.com
- To uninstall your version of Google Earth, select the version from the list and click Remove. See below for a list of possible entries.
- Upgrade to the latest version from our download link at http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html
Here is a list of possible Google Earth entries in the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
- Any item with "Google Earth" in it.

Please note, these entries may begin with "(All Users)" or they may be by themselves.
If you are seeing error 0x80040905 and do not wish to use the Windows CleanUp Utility please follow the instructions below:
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
- Scroll down and select "Google Earth".
- Click Remove, then Yes, then Finish. This may result in an error, which can be ignored.
- Install Google Earth using this Direct Download Link
Note: Using the direct download link will deactivate the mechanism that allows Google Earth to be automatically updated. When a new version is released you will have to perform a manual update. It is for this reason we encourage you to only use the direct download link if you are receiving an installation error marked “0x8..”
