Style your places

You can enhance your Projects with photos, videos, and custom placemarks when using Google Earth on your computer.

Important: Projects can be viewed, but not created or edited, on your mobile devices.

Google Earth Tutorial: Style your places

Edit your placemarks
  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. Click Launch Earth.
  3. On the left, click Projects Projects.
  4. Click the project you want to open. If you don’t have a project, create one.
  5. Click the placemark you want to change, then click Edit Edit.
  6. In the left panel, under "Placemark," change your placemark or label:
    • To change your placemark size, click the “Default size” Down arrow Down arrow and select a size.
    • To change your placemark color, click the Paint bucket Fill color and select a color.
    • To change your placemark icon, select an icon. Or, for more options, click More More and then See more icons and make your choice from the icon gallery. 
    • To create a custom placemark icon, click More More and then Upload custom icon.
      Important: Icons you upload must be in .jpg or .png file format.
    • To add or change a label for your placemark, click Show advanced options. Next to "Show label text," turn your label on or off and select options like color and size.

To create a custom map view, in the bottom right, use the Zoom, Tilt, or Street View tools, then click Capture view.

Change or remove placemark visibility
  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. Click Launch Earth.
  3. On the left, click ProjectsProjects.
  4. Click the project you want to open. If you don’t have a project, create one.
  5. To move your placemark, click the placemark, then click Edit Editand drag it to a new position.
  6. To hide or remove your placemark, go to your project details panel:
    • To hide a placemark and keep it from showing up in your project, point to the placemark name, then click Hide feature Hide feature.
    • To remove a placemark, point to the placemark name, then click Delete feature Delete feature.
Reorder features
  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. Click Launch Earth.
  3. On the left, click Projects Projects.
  4. Click the project you want to open. If you don’t have a project, create one.
  5. In the list of features you've added, drag your slides, lines, shapes, or placemarks into the order you want.
Add photos and videos to your projects
  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. On the left, click Projects Projects.
  3. Click the project you want to open. If you don’t have a project, create one.
  4. To add a photo or video to a placemark, click the placemark, then click Edit Edit.
  5. On the left, click Add a photo Add a photo.
  6. Choose an image or video to upload, and click Select.
  7. To add text and basic formatting, type and use the tools in the Description field.
    Note: Text starting with “http” is automatically hyperlinked.
  8. Your photos and videos will open when you click a placemark in your project.

Your changes are saved automatically.
