Before you book a line item, you might want to review the list of contending line items to see which ones compete for the most impressions.
You can view a list of contending line items in two ways:
Option 1: Line item view
In your DoubleClick for Publishers account, click the Orders tab.
Click the order containing the line item you'd like to view.
Click that line item and then click the Delivery forecast tab.
The number (or percentage, for sponsorship ads) of impressions expected to deliver is derived by running a simulation that takes priority and other criteria that affect delivery into account. It does not assess tie-breaker criteria, such as the cost of line items.
If there is enough inventory available for all line items targeting the same inventory, those line items won’t show up as contending on the Delivery forecast tab.
Option 2: When checking available inventory for a prospective line item
After you review this information, you can edit line item types as necessary.
View the contending line items list
Line items are considered to be contending with the prospective line item if they can serve to any of the same impressions. Another way to think about it is that if a line item shares targeting criteria and a campaign overlap with another line item, they contend with each other. Note, however, that if a line item has no impressions in the sample file, it won’t be listed as contending because it won’t be included in the forecasting simulation.
The list of contending line items is divided into two groups:
Higher- or equal-priority contending line items: These line items with matched or overlapping targeting criteria are likely to take impressions from the prospective line item. By adjusting the targeting criteria of these line items, you'll likely be able to free up inventory for the prospective line item.
Lower-priority contending line items: These line items with matched or overlapping targeting criteria are likely to have impressions taken from them by the prospective line item. By adjusting the targeting criteria of these line items, you'll likely be able to free up inventory for them.

DoubleClick for Publishers employs its forecast simulation to determine which line items contend with your prospective line item. Like the ad server itself, this real-time simulation uses displacement, a process by which line items targeted to equivalent inventory are moved around in order to determine the greatest possible number of impressions the prospective line item may receive.
Because of the way the list of contending line items is generated, line items that have broad delivery scenarios (e.g., run-of-network) are often not included in the list because they can satisfy their delivery goals without taking inventory away from the prospective line item. Likewise, narrowly targeted line items might not be included if there's enough inventory for them and the prospective line item to serve without getting in each others' way.
If you select Max available for your impression or click goal, then you won't see the forecast bar because you haven't set a goal, and the contending line items screen displays results as if you were booking the Available number. When you run a forecast from the Delivery forecast tab of a delivery line item, you’ll see the number of impressions served and see an analysis of whether or not the line item is expected to meet its goal. Take a look at the contending line items results to see which line higher- or equal-priority contending line items can be adjusted to free up inventory for the prospective line item, or, likewise, how the prospective line item’s delivery criteria can be adjusted to avoid contending with these line items.
