Upload and manage creatives

Add creatives to line items

You can add creatives to line items in two different ways: by uploading new creatives or by using a creative that was already uploaded into DoubleClick for Publishers. This article shows you how to do both.

Uploaded creatives can be up to 1 MB.

Add a new creative

To add a new creative to a line item:

  1. In your DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP) account, click the Orders tab.

  2. Click the order where you'd like to add the creative. (You cannot add creatives to canceled or completed orders.)

  3. Click the line item where you'd like to add the creative. You can also create a new line item if needed.

  4. Click Add creatives.

All creatives and ad unit dimensions associated with your line item will be listed on the top of the left-hand column. You can upload creatives to any ad unit size in this list.

  5. You can either drag and drop multiple creatives into the line item or just add one at a time:

    Bulk upload creatives

After you click Save, DFP displays the list of creatives for the current line item.

    1. Drag and drop image, text, and Flash files from your computer to DFP. You can also click Upload new files to browse and select files from your computer. To select more than one file on your computer, hold the SHIFT key down while clicking them.

DFP will automatically set the creative type. For example, if you upload a JPG file, DFP will set the creative type to image. If you upload a TXT file, DFP will set the creative type to third-party. Keep in mind that if you want to upload more than one third-party creative, you need to have a separate text file for each creative.

Bulk upload Flash creatives with backup images: To bulk upload Flash files with their corresponding fallback image files, give the Flash file and its matching image file the same file name, but with a different extension. The file name becomes the creative name.

For example, if you upload bananas.swf and bananas.jpg, DFP will create one Flash creative that uses both assets. The creative name will be bananas.

File types and the creative types DFP will assign to them

      File type Creative type
      GIF, JPG, or PNG Image
      TXT Third-party
      JS (JavaScript) Third-party
      SWF Flash

To select more than one file on your computer, hold the SHIFT key down while clicking them.
    2. Review the contents of the "Code snippet" box, if applicable.

    3. Select the "Target ad unit size" for each creative you upload.

    4. (Optional) Apply a frequency cap label, and click Save.

    5. Insert macros: Click the appropriate creative, click Settings, and click Insert macros.

If DFP doesn't recognize the vendor of the creative, click Manually insert macros and follow the on-screen instructions.

Bulk upload DoubleClick tag creatives from DoubleClick for Advertisers
    1. Get a text file from your DFA advertiser. Ask your DFA advertiser to export tags as a text file and to include internal redirect among the tag types.

    2. Drag and drop the text file from your computer to DFP. You can also click Upload new files to browse and select the file from your computer. DFP will automatically set the creative type as DoubleClick tag for each added creative.

    3. Make any needed changes to the creatives, such as adding labels or changing creative names.
    Add only one creative
    1. Click New creative and select the creative's dimensions.

    2. Select a creative type. Follow the instructions below for adding your creative type, then click Save.

      Third-party
      1. Enter the name for your creative.

      2. Paste any custom HTML and JavaScript snippets as well as tags from a third-party ad server into the Code snippet field.

      3. (Optional) If DFP recognizes your creative, click Insert macros and DFP will automatically insert the appropriate macros into your code snippet.

      4. (Optional) If DFP does not recognize your creative, click Manually insert macros to insert click and cachebusting macros into your code snippet.

      5. Select the target ad unit size where the creative should deliver.

      6. (Optional) Apply frequency cap labels if you want to limit how often an ad from a line item is served to the same user. (Not supported for mobile devices at this time.)

      Flash
If the creative is on your computer
      1. Enter the name for your creative.

      2. In the "Flash file" field, select the creative on your computer. You can only use SWF files.

      3. (Optional) In the "Fallback image file" field, select a fallback image, which will appear if a user can't view Flash. We recommend always including a fallback image.

      4. Enter the clickthrough URL for your creative's landing page.

      5. Select the target ad unit size where the creative should deliver.

If you've selected a creative for upload that doesn't match the ad unit size you specified, you'll receive an error message. Select Allow creative size to differ from ad unit size to resize the ad unit. (For example, if you upload a 400x400 creative to a 300x250 ad unit, DFP will accommodate the larger creative. Or, if you upload a 200x200 creative to the same ad unit, the creative would only occupy 200x200 pixels on your page.)

      6. (Optional) Apply frequency cap labels if you want to limit how often an ad from a line item is served to the same user. (Not supported for mobile devices at this time.)

      7. (Optional) Select Allow Flash without clickTAG if you don't want DFP to track clicks for Flash files.

If the creative is located on a third-party ad server
      1. Enter the name for your creative.

      2. Click Use remote SWF and fallback image URLs.

      3. In the "Flash URL" field, enter the URL of the remote Flash file.

      4. In the "Fallback image URL" field, enter the URL of the remote fallback image file. We recommend always including a fallback image.

      5. Enter the clickthrough URL for your creative's landing page.

      6. Select the target ad unit size where the creative should deliver.

      7. (Optional) Apply frequency cap labels if you want to limit how often an ad from a line item is served to the same user. (Not supported for mobile devices at this time.)

      Image
If the creative is on your computer
      1. Enter the name for your creative.

      2. In the "Image file" field, select the creative on your computer. You can only use images, including GIF, JPG, and PNG files.

      3. Enter the Destination for your creative's landing page.

If you are using an unmodified asynchronous Google Publisher Tag (GPT), the ad unit itself will not resize to fit the creative. The ad unit will only be resized with synchronous GPT tags. (For example, if you upload a 400 x 400 creative to a 300 x 250 ad unit, DFP will accommodate the larger creative. Or, if you upload a 200 x 200 creative to the same ad unit, the creative would only occupy 200 x 200 pixels on your page.)
      5. (Optional) Apply frequency cap labels if you want to limit how often an ad from a line item is served to the same user. (Not supported for mobile devices at this time.)

      6. (Optional) Enter a third-party impression URL to be pinged when the creative appears. The URL can contain DFP macros.

      7. (Optional) Enter Alt text for screen readers and to be displayed in browsers with images disabled.

If the creative is located on a third-party ad server
      1. Click Use a remote image.

      2. Enter the name for your creative.

      3. In the "Image URL" field, enter the URL of the remote image file.

      4. Enter the Destination for your creative's landing page.

      • To create a new template, see Create your own creative templates.

  6. Click Save.

Use an existing creative

You can add an existing creative to one line item at a time or to multiple line items at once.

When you add an existing creative to multiple line items, you're creating new associations between the creative and each of those line items. The associations share the same settings and are automatically updated whenever the original creative is updated, but you can change their start and end dates and click-through URL independently (see Changing creative start/end dates and click-through URLs).

You can only reuse creatives from the same advertiser.

Why reuse creatives?

Reusing creatives enables you to upload a creative once and assign it to multiple line items instead of repeatedly uploading the same creative for different line items. Additionally, you can reduce mistakes made from uploading and assigning creatives from separate emails, and quickly facilitate change orders when an advertiser wants to replace or remove the content of a line item.

For example, one of your advertisers wants to remove an image creative that contains a spelling error. The creative is rotating in five different line items on your website. You can go to one of the line items assigned to the creative and deactivate the creative so that it will stop serving in all five line items, rather than deactivating five separate creatives. You can then upload a new image file that contains the correct spelling, and reactivate the creative for serving.

Add an existing creative to multiple line items in an order

If you have multiple line items within an order that share the same creative size, you can add creatives to them in bulk.

To use a creative already in DoubleClick with more than one line item in an order:

  1. On the Line items tab for the order, enable the checkboxes for the line items you want to choose.

  2. Click Add existing creative and choose a size.

  3. Click on Orders, Creative types, or Creatives to find the existing creatives that you want to add.

  4. For each creative that you want to add, click include.

  5. Click Save.

If you remove the size filter and add creatives with sizes different from those set for the line items, DFP will set size overrides in the line items, allowing the line items to deliver the differently sized creatives.

Add an existing creative to a new line item

To use a creative already in DoubleClick for Publishers with a new line item:

  1. When creating a line item, click Add creatives.

  2. Select Use an existing creative.

  3. Browse or search for the creative you want to reuse.

The results are automatically filtered to only display creatives that are the same size as the line item. If you don't get any results, then you might not have any creatives that have the same size as the line item.

  4. Click add next to the creative you want to associate with the line item.

The creative will appear in the "Selected items" list.

  5. Click Save.

The new association is added to the line item's list of creatives.

After you assign the creative to the line item, you'll be able to:

  • See cumulative delivery statistics for the line item with that creative.

  • Review all of the line items assigned to the creative.

  • Override the fields associated with each line item.

Change creative start/end dates and click-through URLs

  1. In the line item's "Creatives" tab, click the creative you want to edit.

  2. Click the Line items tab.

  3. Click edit next to the fields you want to change on the right side (Start, End, Destination URL).

Note that "Line item start date" or "Line item end date" will appear next to the creative "Start" and "End" fields if the creative is inheriting the default times of the line item.

    1. Changing either of these fields only changes the start and end date or click-through URL for the creative associated with this particular line item. (Changing these fields also breaks their link with the original creative. That is, the settings will no longer be updated automatically when you update them in the original creative). Any other associations the creative may have with other line items won't be affected.

    2. Remember, if you want to update the original creative and, consequently, anywhere it's reused, edit the creative in the creative's settings tab.

  4. Click Save.
